(3). It is narrated from Sulayman bin Yasar that when the people had dispersed from around Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), a man from Syria said to him: "O Shaykh, narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The first person to be judged on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who was (outwardly) martyred. He will be brought, and Allah Almighty will remind him of His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. Allah will ask: 'What did you do in return for these blessings?' He will say: 'I fought in Your cause until I was martyred.' Allah will say: 'You have lied. Rather, you fought so that you would be called "brave", and that has been said.' Then orders will be given concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. And (then) a man who acquired knowledge, taught it and recited the Qur'an. He will be brought, and Allah will remind him of His blessings, and he will recognise them. Allah will ask: 'What did you do with them?' He will say: 'I acquired knowledge for Your sake, taught it, and recited the Qur'an for Your sake.' Allah will say: 'You have lied. Rather, you acquired knowledge so that you would be called "a scholar", and you recited the Qur'an so that you would be called "a reciter", and that has been said.' Then orders will be given concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. And (then) a man whom Allah gave abundance and granted every kind of wealth. He will be brought, and Allah will remind him of His blessings, and he will recognise them. Allah will ask: 'What did you do with them?' He will say: 'I did not leave any cause in which You love that wealth be spent except that I spent in it for Your sake.' Allah will say: 'You have lied. Rather, you did that so that you would be called "generous", and that has been said.' Then orders will be given concerning him, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but Imam Bukhari did not record it.

Reference / Source: Muslim (1905) narrated it through two trustworthy students of Ibn Jurayj.
