Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2553

Abu al-Ajfa' al-Sulami said: I heard Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "Another thing you say about those who are killed or die in these military expeditions of yours is: 'So-and-so was killed and he is a martyr', or 'So-and-so died a martyr', whereas it may be that he had loaded the rear of his mount with gold or silver seeking trade. So do not say that (definitively); rather, say what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever is killed in the path of Allah or dies, he is in Paradise.'"
This is a great and sahih (authentic) hadith, but neither of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) recorded it, because Salamah bin Alqamah, narrating from Ibn Sirin, said: "I was informed on the authority of Abu al-Ajfa'"; and I (Imam al-Hakim), if Allah wills, will mention in the Book of Marriage something by which its authenticity can be established.
