Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2518

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a military expedition or a journey and night fell, he would say: 'Ya ardu, rabbi wa rabbuki Allah, a'udhu billahi min sharriki, wa sharri ma fiki, wa sharri ma khuliqa fiki, wa sharri ma dabba 'alayki, a'udhu billahi min sharri kulli asadin wa aswada wa hayyatin wa 'aqrabin, wa min sharri sakini al-baladi, wa min sharri walidin wa ma walad' (O earth, my Lord and your Lord is Allah. I seek refuge in Allah from your evil, from the evil of what is in you, from the evil of what has been created in you, and from the evil of what creeps upon you. I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of every lion, black snake, serpent and scorpion, from the evil of the dwellers of the land (the jinn), and from the evil of a father and what he begets).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
