It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went in to one of his household who was suffering from fever. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is this Umm Mildam (fever)?" A woman said: Yes, may Allah curse it. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not curse it, for it washes away (or: removes) the sins of the children of Adam just as the furnace removes the impurities of iron."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim; there is no hidden defect in it, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is sahih and its chain is qawi (strong). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Ubayd bin Sharik is "saduq", and there is no harm in him. Identification of names: Ibn Abi Maryam is Sa'id bin al-Hakam bin Abi Maryam, and Abu al-Zubayr is Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i narrated it (10835) by way of Ibrahim bin Ya'qub, from Ibn Abi Maryam, with this same chain. Reference / Source: A narration of similar meaning was reported by Muslim (2575) and Ibn Hibban (2938) through the route of Hajjaj al-Sawwaf, from Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir. Important point: The author's (al-Hakim's) including this hadith in the Mustadrak as something the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) missed is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part, since it is already there. This narration will come further on at number (1295), where the author himself indicated that it is found with Muslim through this route. Note / Clarification: "Al-Kir" (the furnace bellows) is the instrument with which air is blown onto a fire to make it blaze.
