Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2466

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Military expeditions (jihad) are of two kinds: as for the one who seeks the pleasure of Allah, obeys the imam, spends his finest wealth, treats his companion gently and avoids corruption, his sleeping and his waking are all reward. But as for the one who fights out of pride, for show and for reputation, disobeys the imam and spreads corruption in the land, he will not even return breaking even (between reward and sin)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is hasan as "mawquf", but as "marfu'" its chain is weak because of the weakness of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid and his "tadlis al-taswiyah".
Technical note: Here Haywah bin Shurayh is "al-Hadrami" (from Hims), whereas the one in the previous narration was "al-Tujibi" (from Egypt).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad and Abu Dawud (2515) narrated it with this same chain of Haywah bin Shurayh.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad and al-Nasa'i narrated it via various chains of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid.
Grading: The chain of Sa'id bin Mansur's mawquf narration, Junadah from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), is hasan.
Technical note: Imam Malik narrated it in al-Muwatta' from Yahya bin Sa'id from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) as mawquf, but it is "munqati'" (broken), because Yahya bin Sa'id did not hear from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: "Karimah" (plural: kara'im) means precious things that are very dear to their owner.
Note / Clarification: "Yasara al-sharik" means to bring leniency and ease into one's dealings with one's companion or partner, and to help him.
