Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2460

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent an army to Banu Lihyan and said: "Let one man out of every two men go out (for jihad)." Then he said to the one staying behind: "Whoever among you stays behind and looks after the family and the wealth of the fighter who goes out in a good manner will receive a reward equal to half the reward of the fighter."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with these words; however, Imam Muslim alone recorded the hadith of Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever equips a fighter in the way of Allah, it is as if he himself has fought."

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This chain is hasan because of Yazid bin Abi Sa'id and his father.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, Muslim (1896), Abu Dawud and Ibn Hibban narrated it via Abd Allah bin Wahb.
Important point: Since it is in Sahih Muslim, al-Hakim's including it in al-Mustadrak is an oversight on his part.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (11527) narrated it with the chain Ibn Lahi'ah from Yazid bin Abi Habib.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, Muslim and Ibn Hibban narrated it via Yahya bin Abi Kathir with these words: "Let one man out of every two go forth (for jihad), and the reward will be (equally) between them."
General principle: There is no contradiction between this hadith and the hadith of Zayd bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him), because "half the reward" means that the fighter and the one who looks after the family he leaves behind will both receive an equal reward, as Hafiz Ibn Hajar explained in "Fath al-Bari".

Technical note: The word "وحده" (alone) is missing from manuscript (Z).

Important point: The author's (al-Hakim's) claim that only Imam Muslim narrated it is not correct, because it is also found in Imam al-Bukhari (2843).
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim also narrated it via Bukayr bin al-Ashajj.
