Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2457

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that, while delivering a sermon on the pulpit, he said: I am telling you a hadith which nothing kept me from narrating to you except my fear of your excessive eagerness (for jihad). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Keeping guard for one night in the path of Allah is better than a thousand nights whose nights are spent standing in prayer and whose days are spent fasting."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: The manuscripts have, with doubt, "or be fasted" (aw yusam), but according to Imam al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis" and al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" the correct wording is "fasting" alone, which agrees with all the other narrators.

Grading: The chain is weak because Mus'ab bin Thabit is weak, and his narration from his grandfather is "mursal".
Technical note: According to Imam al-Daraqutni, the more correct version is that he narrated directly from 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) (the mention of the grandfather having dropped out in between).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (433) narrated it through the chain of Rawh bin 'Ubadah from Kahmas.
Reference / Source: In Imam Ahmad's narration (463), Mus'ab bin Thabit transmits directly from 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (2766) narrated it through the chain of Zayd bin Aslam from Mus'ab bin Thabit from 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr.
Grading: The sahih narration from 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) is the one transmitted by his freed slave Abu Salih: "Guarding (the frontier) for one day in the path of Allah is better than a thousand days in other places." It does not mention fasting and night prayer.
Note / Clarification: Another narration with the words "a day in the path of Allah" has passed earlier at number (2412).
Grading: The soundest narration mentioning night prayer and fasting is that of Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) (numbers 2453, 2454), whose words are: "He will have the reward of a month's fasting and night prayer."
