أخبرنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن يعقوب الحافظ، حدثنا يحيى بن محمد بن يحيى، حدثنا مُسدَّد، حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد، حدثنا ثَوْر بن يزيد، عن عبد الرحمن بن عائذ، عن مجاهد، عن ابن عمر، أنَّ النبي ﷺ قال: "أَلا أنبِّئكُم بليلةٍ أفضلَ من ليلةِ القَدْرِ: حارِسٌ حَرَسَ في أرضِ خوفٍ، لعلّه أن لا يَرجِعَ إلى أهلِه" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط البخاري، ولم يُخرجاه. وقد أَوقفَه وكيعُ بن الجرّاح عن ثور، وفي يحيى بن سعيد قُدوة (3).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of a night that is better than the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr)? It is the night of a guard who keeps watch in a place of fear, without the hope that he will be able to return to his family."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Waki' bin al-Jarrah narrated it from Thawr as mawquf (as the saying of a Companion), but Yahya bin Sa'id is an authority to be followed.

(2) إسناده ضعيف لجهالة مجاهد - وهو ابن رباح - كما قُيِّد في بعض الروايات فليس هو مجاهد بن جبر المكي، ثم إنه وقع فيه اختلاف في رفعِه ووقفِه، فرفعه يحيى القطان، ووقفه وكيع كما في الطريق التالية، وكان يحيى القطان يقفه أحيانًا. وانظر "علل الدارقطني" (2846).
Grading: The chain is weak because Mujahid (Ibn Rabah) is unknown; he is not the well-known Mujahid bin Jabr al-Makki.
Technical note: There is also disagreement over whether this narration is "marfu'" (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) or "mawquf" (a saying of a Companion). Yahya al-Qattan would sometimes narrate it as marfu' and sometimes as mawquf, while Waki' narrated it as mawquf.
وأخرجه النسائي (8817) عن محمد بن بشار، عن يحيى بن سعيد القطان، بهذا الإسناد. وقيَّد فيه مجاهدًا بابن رباح، وقال محمد بن بشار في آخره: كان يحيى إذا حدَّث به على رؤوس الملأ لا يرفعه، وإذا حدث به في خلوته وخاصته رفعه.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (8817) narrated it through the chain of Yahya al-Qattan.
Technical note: Muhammad bin Bashshar says that when Yahya al-Qattan narrated this hadith in a public gathering he would not narrate it as marfu', but among his close students he would narrate it as marfu'.
(3) لكن لم يكن يرفعه على الاطّراد كما أسلفنا فكأن الأصح روايته موقوفًا، على أنَّ ذلك إن ثبت من جهة الإسناد لا يَضُرّ، إذ إنَّ مثله لا يقال من جهة الرأي، ولكن لم يثبت لما عرفناه من جهالة التابعي، والله أعلم.
Grading: Since it was not consistently narrated as marfu', the more correct view is that it is "mawquf", and because the Successor is unknown its chain is not established.
