It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the prayer while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading us in prayer. When he reached the row he supplicated: 'Allahumma atini afdala ma tu'ti 'ibadaka al-salihin' (O Allah, grant me the best of what You grant Your righteous servants). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prayer, he asked: "Who was the one who spoke a little while ago?" The man said: O Messenger of Allah! It was me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then your horse will be slaughtered and you will be martyred in the path of Allah."

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: This portion has dropped out of the manuscripts here, but it is established with the author in the earlier narration (759) via Ibrahim bin Hamzah al-Zubayri from al-Darawardi, and this is correct according to the other sources.

Grading: This is "hasan li-ghayrihi".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Abu Hatim called the narrator Muhammad bin Muslim bin 'A'idh unknown (majhul), al-'Ijli and Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy, and Ibn Khuzaymah graded his hadith sahih. A supporting report for this narration is found at hadith (759).
