أخبرَناه أحمد بن محمد العَنَزي، حدثنا عثمان بن سعيد الدارمي، حدثنا سليمان بن عبد الرحمن الدمشقي، حدثنا الوليد بن مسلم، حدثنا الأوزاعي، حدثني يحيى بن أبي كثير، حدثني أبو سلمة، حدثني عبد الله بن سَلَام، قال: كنا قعودًا عند النبي ﷺ، فقلنا: لو نعلم أيُّ الأعمال أحبُّ إلى الله، فذكر الحديثَ بنحوه (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه، وأكبرُ ظني أنَّ الذي حملهما على تركه روايةُ الهِقْل بن زياد بخلاف رواية الوليد بن مسلم وغيره:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him): We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we said: "If only we knew which deed is most beloved to Allah Almighty." Then the narrator mentioned the whole account like the hadith above.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. My strongest opinion is that what led them to leave it is the narration of al-Hiql bin Ziyad, which differs from the narration of al-Walid bin Muslim and others.

Grading: The chain is "sahih", and Hisham bin 'Ammar and Duhaym also narrated it from al-Walid bin Muslim. وأخرجه ابن حبان (4594) من طريق هشام بن عمار، عن الوليد بن مسلم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it via Hisham bin 'Ammar. ورواية دُحيم عند ابن أبي عاصم في "الجهاد" (141)، والطبراني في "الكبير" (14989).
