It is narrated from Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the occasion of the Farewell Hajj: "Shall I not tell you who the believer is? (The believer is) the one from whom people feel secure regarding their wealth and their lives; the Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe; the mujahid is the one who strives against his own self in obedience to Allah; and the emigrant (muhajir) is the one who abandons errors and sins."
There is another addition in it on the condition of Imam Muslim which both of them did not narrate.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) Thus in the original manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak": "al-Laythi" is written with "'Amr bin Malik", which is a "slip of the pen"; he is "al-Janbi". Perhaps al-Hakim or the first copyist meant to write "al-Janbi" and wrote "al-Laythi" by mistake, or meant to write it for Fadalah bin 'Ubayd (who is Laythi) and wrote it for 'Amr by mistake.
Grading: (1) The hadith is "sahih", but the author's chain is "da'if" (weak) because of the weakness of his shaykh (see his biography in al-Dhahabi's "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 16/ 15-16); he has been corroborated. Al-Layth: Ibn Sa'd; Abu Hani' al-Khawlani: Humayd bin Hani'. Reference / Source: Ahmad (39/ 23958) narrated it by way of Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, from al-Layth bin Sa'd, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3934) narrated it in abridged form by way of Abd Allah bin Wahb, and al-Tirmidhi (1621) by way of Haywah bin Shurayh, both from Abu Hani'. Ibn Majah extracted from it the description of the believer and the emigrant, and al-Tirmidhi the description of the mujahid, and he said: "hasan sahih".
