Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2142

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the prayer was established, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to us, pass his hand over our shoulders and say: "Keep your rows straight, and do not differ, or your hearts will differ. Let those of you who are wise and have understanding stay close to me. And adorn the Qur'an with your voices. Indeed, Allah and His angels send mercy upon the front row."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Exception: The hadith is
sahih, except that the words "let those of you who are mature and intelligent stand close to me" are not established through this chain (of al-Bara' bin Azib), because they were narrated only by Sa'id bin Zarbi, who is weak. However, these words are established in Muslim from other authentic hadiths (of Abu Mas'ud and Ibn Mas'ud).
