It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is one of the names of Allah, and the difference (in nearness) between it and the Greatest Name of Allah is only as much as that between the black of the eye and its white."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is weak; Sallam bin Wahb al-Janadi and his father are both unknown (majhul). Abu Hatim al-Razi called it "munkar", and al-Uqayli said that Sallam is not corroborated in this narration and that he is known only through it. Grading: Imam al-Dhahabi declared it "mawdu'" (fabricated). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Uqayli (624), Ibn Abi Hatim and al-Bayhaqi recorded it through the route of Ja'far bin Musafir, but in al-Uqayli's narration the chain is given as "Sallam bin Wahb from Ibn Tawus". Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi recorded it in "Tarikh Baghdad", and through him al-Dhahabi in "al-Mizan", through the route of Zayd bin al-Mubarak.
