Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2016

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I think he was Awf bin Malik. He said: O Messenger of Allah, the people of such-and-such a tribe have raided me and taken away my son and my camels. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the (nine) households of the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) there is not even a sa' or a mudd of food, so ask Allah, the Mighty and Majestic." The man went back to his wife, and she asked what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had replied. He told her the whole matter. The narrator said: Only a short while had passed when his camels and his son were returned to him in a better state than before. The man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit, praised and extolled Allah, commanded the people to ask of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and to turn to Him in longing, and recited to them these verses: "And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out (of difficulties), and will provide for him from where he does not expect." [Surah al-Talaq: 2, 3]
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: Its narrators are apparently unobjectionable, but there is disagreement over whether it is "mawsul" (connected) or "mursal". According to al-Daraqutni the correct view is that it is "mursal". Even if it is accepted as connected, the chain is interrupted, because Abu Ubaydah did not hear from his father Abdullah bin Mas'ud.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi and Ibn Asakir recorded it through this same chain of Imam al-Hakim.
Grading: Ishaq bin Isma'il al-Taliqani, contradicting Muhammad bin Muzahim, narrated it as "mursal" (without mentioning the father). Since Ishaq is a strong narrator, his mursal version is more reliable.
Grading: The trustworthy narrator Ja'far bin Awn also narrated it through Mis'ar as "mursal".
Technical note: Malik bin Su'ayr and al-Mas'udi narrated it as "mawsul" (mentioning Ibn Mas'ud). The chain of al-Mas'udi is in Ibn Majah's narration, but it is not clear whether Abu al-Mughirah heard from al-Mas'udi before or after his memory became confused (ikhtilat).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: One supporting report for it is the narration of Jabir bin Abdullah (no. 3862), but there too the correct view is that it is "mursal", and its wording also differs somewhat.
Grading: Another supporting report for it is the "mursal" narration of al-Suddi (Tafsir al-Tabari), whose narrators are unobjectionable.
Discussion of the chain: The mursal narration of Muhammad bin Ishaq also exists as a supporting report, in which the Companion is named Malik al-Ashja'i. However, one of its narrators, Abdullah bin al-Walid, is unknown (majhul).
Defect in the chain: This story is also narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), but its chain contains a liar and an abandoned narrator.
Grading: Overall, on the basis of the mursal narrations of Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd and al-Suddi, this report can be graded "hasan". And Allah knows best.
