Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2007

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min fitnatin-nari wa 'adhabin-nar, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri wa 'adhabil-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min sharri fitnatil-ghina, wa min sharri fitnatil-faqr, wa a'udhu bika min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali wal-haram, wal-ma'thami wal-maghram' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Fire and the punishment of the Fire; I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the grave; I seek refuge in You from the evil of the trial of wealth and from the evil of the trial of poverty; and I seek refuge in You from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah, the Dajjal. O Allah, wash away my sins with the water of snow and hail, cleanse my heart of sins as You have cleansed a white garment of dirt, and put as much distance between me and my sins as You have put between the East and the West. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, extreme old age, sin and the burden of debt).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Muhammad bin Ghalib is Ibn Harb, whose nickname is "Tamtam".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, al-Bukhari (6368, 6375, 6376), Muslim (2705), Ibn Majah, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i narrated it through various routes from Hisham bin 'Urwah.
Reference / Source: The imams of the Six Books (al-Bukhari, Muslim and others) also narrated it through the chain of al-Zuhri from 'Urwah. In al-Zuhri's narration this supplication is restricted to the "prayer", and it also has this addition: someone asked, "O Messenger of Allah, why do you seek refuge from debt so often?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a man is in debt, he speaks and lies, and he promises and breaks his promise."
Technical note: Seeking refuge from Hell, the trial of the Dajjal, the punishment of the grave and the trial of life and death has already been mentioned at no. (1418) with the chain of Tawus al-Yamani from 'A'ishah, in which Tawus stated explicitly that he (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication in the prayer after the "final tashahhud".
Note / Clarification: The explanation of "ma'tham" (sin) and "maghram" (debt) has already passed at no. (1943).

Important point: Imam al-Bukhari and Muslim have narrated this hadith with this very wording (context), so no istidrak (objection) against them is warranted.
