Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1956

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that whenever the dining cloth was removed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: 'Alhamdu lillahi kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fih, ghayra makfiyyin, wa la muwadda'in, wa la mustaghnan 'anhu rabbuna' (All praise is for Allah, abundant, pure and blessed praise; praise that is not sufficient (for the blessings of Allah), that cannot be bid farewell, and of which our Lord cannot be free of need).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The word "mubarakan" (blessed) had dropped out of the manuscripts; it has been included in light of al-Dhahabi's Talkhis and other hadith books, because without it the sentence was incomplete.

Grading: The hadith is sahih. Because of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Harithi the chain is "hasan", and it has other corroborations.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi narrated it with the chain of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, and al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan sahih".
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah narrated it via the route of Thawr bin Yazid. In al-Bukhari's narration there are some differences in wording, and Imam al-Hakim's including it as a supplement (istidrak) (thinking it was outside al-Bukhari and Muslim) is an oversight on his part.
Instruction: This narration will come again later at numbers (7375) and (7374).
Linguistic explanation: "Ghayra makfiyy" can have two meanings: one, that Allah has no need of anyone to feed Him, rather He is the one who feeds everyone; the other, that this food has not been rejected.
Linguistic explanation: "Ghayra makfur" means the One whose blessing is not denied, and "ghayra muwadda'" means the One who is not abandoned, rather one always turns to Him in longing.
