Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1954

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that among the supplications of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was this one: 'Allahumma amti'ni bi-sam'i wa basari hatta taj'alahumal-waritha minni, wa 'afini fi dini wa jasadi, wansurni mimman zalamani hatta turiyani fihi tha'ri. Allahumma inni aslamtu dini ilayk, wa fawwadtu amri ilayk, wa alja'tu zahri ilayk, wa khallaytu wajhi ilayk, la malja'a minka illa ilayk, amantu bi-rasulikal-ladhi arsalt, wa bi-kitabikal-ladhi anzalt' (O Allah, let me benefit from my hearing and my sight until my last breath and make them my heir; grant me well-being in my religion and my body; and help me against the one who has wronged me until You show me my retribution against him. O Allah, I have submitted my religion to You, entrusted my affair to You, placed my back under Your protection and turned my face towards You. There is no refuge and no place of safety except with You. I believe in Your Messenger whom You sent, and in Your Book which You revealed).
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. This Husayn bin Ali, from whom Musa bin Uqbah narrated, is Husayn al-Asghar, whom Abdullah bin al-Mubarak met and from whom he narrated the hadith about the times of prayer.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The printed edition has the word "nafsi" (myself), but our manuscripts have "dini" (my religion), and this is correct. Although "nafsi" is the well-known wording in the two Sahihs, other narrations of al-Nasa'i show that both wordings are narrated, so "dini" should not be regarded as an error.

Grading: It is "sahih" on account of supporting reports. The narrators of its chain are thiqah, but 'Ali bin al-Husayn did not meet his grandfather 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Hafs bin Maysarah is thiqah, whereas 'Abdullah bin Ja'far, who presented the other chain against him, is weak.
Reference / Source: Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi narrated it in "al-Mukhtarah", and Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar", with this same chain of Imam al-Hakim.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Du'a'", "al-Awsat" and "al-Saghir" with the chain of 'Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Madini.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for the first part of this supplication, up to "tha'ri" (my vengeance), is found in the earlier hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) (number 1939).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for the second part is the narration of al-Bara' bin 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari and Muslim, in which it is mentioned that this supplication is for the time of going to sleep.
Variation in the chain: Here the words "bi-rasulika alladhi arsalta" (by Your Messenger whom You sent) are an error. According to the narration of al-Bukhari and Muslim, when al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this wording, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his chest with his hand and corrected him, saying "wa bi-nabiyyika alladhi arsalta" (and by Your Prophet whom You sent), so that there would be no repetition.

Instruction: This narration has already passed at number (707).
