It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "My father is very old; he reached Islam but has not been able to perform Hajj. He cannot even stay steady on a mount, and if I tie him to the mount with a rope, I fear he may die." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perform Hajj on behalf of your father."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with these words.

Grading: This hadith is sahih, but as a narration of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) (not of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)). Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Uthman bin al-Haytham was not a hafiz; he erred and reported it as a narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Yahya bin Abi al-Hajjaj also supported him, but he is a "layyin" (soft, weak) narrator, and he himself elsewhere narrated it from al-Hasan al-Basri as "mursal", thereby invalidating his first narration. Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to al-Daraqutni, the correct version is that it is the narration of Sulayman bin Yasar from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). In one narration of al-Nasa'i the name al-Fadl (bin 'Abbas) appears instead of Ibn 'Abbas, but Sulayman did not hear from al-Fadl; so the correct narration is the one in which 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) is the intermediary between Sulayman and al-Fadl (as in al-Bukhari and Muslim). Note / Clarification: According to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, the questioner's name was Husayn bin 'Awf al-Khath'ami. He also made clear that the story of al-Khath'ami is separate from the story of Abu Razin, and that treating the two as one is far-fetched and forced.
