It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Sa'ib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was among those who built the House of Allah. I took a stone, levelled it, and placed it beside the House of Allah. He says: I used to worship it (in the time of Ignorance), to the extent that if there was any fine thing in the house, I would send it to it, until one day I had some good milk, and I poured it over it. Then, when Quraysh intended to build the House of Allah, they disagreed over placing the Black Stone, until swords were about to be drawn between them. Then they said: Make the first person who enters through this door (the judge) between you. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered, and they cried out: This is "al-Amin" (the Trustworthy), (for in the time of Ignorance they used to call him (peace and blessings be upon him) al-Amin). They said: O Muhammad, we are pleased with you. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for a cloth, spread it out, and placed the Black Stone in it. Then he said to these various clans: "Let every clan among you take hold of a corner of the cloth." They did so, then they lifted it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed it (in its appointed spot) with his own blessed hand.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. It also has an authentic supporting narration (shahid) on his condition:

Grading: This hadith is sahih; its narrators are thiqah, except that Hilal bin Khabbab suffered a decline (in memory) at the end of his life, and here he erred in the name of the Companion, calling him "Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib", whereas Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib was too young at the time of the rebuilding of the Ka'bah in the Jahiliyyah; the one who actually witnessed it was his father "al-Sa'ib", who was the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) business partner before the prophethood and lived long enough to see the caliphate of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Important point: In any case, this is merely a difference over the name of the Companion, which does not harm (the soundness of the hadith). Note / Clarification: Mujahid refers to Ibn Jabr al-Makki, who was a freed slave (mawla) of the family of al-Sa'ib. Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi narrated it in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (5596), Ibn Qani' in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" 1/ 300 and Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (113) by way of Sa'id bin Sulayman al-Wasiti with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The mention of Mujahid has dropped out of the printed edition of "Mu'jam al-Sahabah". Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated a similar report at 24 / (15504) by way of Abd al-Samad bin Abd al-Warith from Thabit bin Yazid al-Ahwal from Hilal bin Khabbab, in which he said "from Mujahid from his mawla" without explicitly naming the mawla.
