It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna al-Aqra' bin Habis (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! Is Hajj (obligatory) every year, or only once in a lifetime?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Only once, and whoever does more than that, it is a voluntary deed (tatawwu')."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), and Abu Sinan here is al-Du'ali. The two Shaykhs did not record it because they did not transmit the hadiths of Sufyan bin Husayn, although he is among the trustworthy narrators whose hadith is considered reliable.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Variation in the chain: Manuscript (z) has "fa-man arada an yatatawwa'", while (s), ('a) and (b) have other wordings; according to al-Bayhaqi's narrations (from the author (al-Hakim) himself), the correct wording is "fa-man zada fa-tatawwu'" or "fa-man zada fa-huwa tatawwu'".
Grading: The hadith is sahih. Sufyan bin Husayn is thiqah (trustworthy) except in his narrations from al-Zuhri, but here he has been corroborated. Criticism of a narrator: Sa'id bin Mas'ud is Ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Marwazi, and Abu Sinan is Yazid bin Umayyah al-Du'ali. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad 5/ (3303), Abu Dawud (1721) and Ibn Majah (2886) via the chain of Yazid bin Harun. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (3520) via Zam'ah bin Salih, and by al-Nasa'i (3586) via Abd al-Jalil bin Humayd, both from al-Zuhri. Details of the narration: It will come later via Yazid bin Harun (no. 3194) and via various routes from al-Zuhri (nos. 1745, 1746 and 3193). According to the author, these three hadiths (3214 - 3216) ought to have been placed at the beginning of the Book of the Rites of Hajj, but that was not possible, so he placed them in the tafsir of the verse. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 4/ (2663) and (2741) and 5/ (2969) and (2996) narrated via 'Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hajj is due on every Muslim, and if I had said every year, it would have become so." (3195). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the hadith of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), which will come later at no. (3195). (2885). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is in Muslim (1337), and that of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is in Ibn Majah (2885).
