It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever plays nard (backgammon, a dice game of chance) has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it because of the poor memory of Abdullah bin Sa'id bin Abi Hind.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although all its narrators are thiqah, there is "inqita'" (a break) between Sa'id bin Abi Hind and Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) (that is, he did not hear from him).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, it is strengthened because it is narrated through another route in Musnad Ahmad (32/19649).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Identification of the narrators: Abu al-Muthanna is "Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna al-Anbari", Yahya is "Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan", and Ubayd Allah is "Ubayd Allah bin Umar al-Umari".
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (32/19580) through the chain of Yahya al-Qattan, and Muhammad bin Ubayd al-Tanafisi corroborated him.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah narrated it (3762) through two different routes from Ubayd Allah bin Umar (al-Umari), with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (19551, 19521), Abu Dawud (4938) and Ibn Hibban (5872) narrated it through the routes of Musa bin Maysarah and Usamah bin Zayd al-Laythi; both of them narrate from Sa'id bin Abi Hind.
