Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1577

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man in al-Baqi' who was having cupping done; at that time he (peace and blessings be upon him) was holding my hand, and eighteen nights of Ramadan had passed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who performs cupping and the one who has it done have both broken their fast."
Ishaq bin Ibrahim (Ibn Rahawayh) says that this is an authentic chain by which proof (for a legal ruling) is established. This hadith is established as authentic through several chains, and this is our position as well. May Allah Almighty be pleased with Imam Abu Ya'qub (Ishaq bin Rahawayh), who judged authentic a hadith whose authenticity is perfectly clear, and held to it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Criticism of a narrator: Ishaq bin Ibrahim refers to al-Hanzali (Ibn Rahawayh); Wuhayb refers to Ibn Khalid al-Bahili; Ayyub is al-Sikhtiyani; Abu Qilabah is 'Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Jarmi; and Abu al-Ash'ath refers to Shurahbil bin Adah.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2369) narrated it from Musa bin Isma'il with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (28/ 17124) and al-Nasa'i (3129) narrated it through two routes from Ayyub al-Sikhtiyani.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (17112 and others), al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban (3534) narrated it through the route of Khalid bin Mihran al-Hadhdha', and al-Nasa'i through the route of Mansur bin Zadhan (both from Abu Qilabah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ahmad (17117) narrated it through the chain of 'Abd al-Razzaq from Ma'mar from Ayyub, in which "Abu Asma' al-Rahabi" is added between Abu al-Ash'ath and Shaddad; in hadith science this falls under "al-mazid fi muttasil al-asanid" (the addition of a narrator within a connected chain).
Reference / Source: Likewise, with the addition of Abu Asma', Ahmad (17129) and al-Nasa'i narrated it through the routes of Dawud bin Abi Hind and al-Muthanna bin Sa'd.
Details of the narration: Hammad bin Zayd and Sufyan al-Thawri narrated it through the chain of Ayyub from Abu Qilabah from Shaddad; they did not mention Abu al-Ash'ath or al-Rahabi.
Reference / Source: Without mentioning these two, Ahmad (37/ 22449), Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah narrated it through the chain of Yahya bin Abi Kathir from Abu Qilabah from Shaddad.
Variation in the chain: Al-Nasa'i (3127), through the route of 'Asim bin Hilal, mentioned the name "Abu Asma' al-Rahabi" instead of Abu al-Ash'ath.
Reference / Source: Likewise, Ahmad (28/ 17125) and al-Nasa'i narrated it through the chain of Qatadah from Abu Qilabah from Abu Asma'.
Variation in the chain: Imam Ahmad (17138) narrated it through the chain of Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah from Ayyub, via "an unnamed person", from Shaddad bin Aws; neither Abu al-Ash'ath nor Abu Asma' is named in it.

Criticism of a narrator: He is the same Abu Ya'qub Ishaq bin Ibrahim al-Hanzali (Ibn Rahawayh) who was mentioned earlier.
