Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1525

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Which charity is most beloved to you?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Giving water to drink."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Via Sa'id bin al-Musayyib it is sahih; although his hearing from Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established, the majority of the imams accept his "mursal" narrations as proof.
Defect / Technical note: Al-Hasan al-Basri's hearing from Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) is also not established; therefore Imam al-Dhahabi objected to al-Hakim's calling it "sahih on the condition of al-Bukhari and Muslim" and said that it is not connected (muttasil).
