Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, and because of Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar al-'Utaridi this chain is hasan,
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: however, he has been corroborated (mutaba'ah). Some difference has also occurred in this chain, as will come, but this difference does no harm, since the whole hadith revolves around trustworthy narrators.
Criticism of a narrator: Abu Mu'awiyah is Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir, al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran, Abu Wa'il is Shaqiq bin Salamah, and Masruq is Ibn al-Ajda'. Abu Mu'awiyah narrated it, and there is a difference among those narrating from him (regarding the chain):
Details of the narration: Here Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar narrated it from Abu Mu'awiyah, from al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il, from Masruq, from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).
Details of the narration: Whereas Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Nufayli narrated it from Abu Mu'awiyah, from al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il, directly from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) (without mentioning Masruq in between).
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1576 and 3038) narrated it through al-Nufayli.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Muhammad bin Ishaq also supported Abu Mu'awiyah in this chain without mentioning Masruq; he narrated it from al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il, from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (2245) narrated it.
Variation in the chain: Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Nufayli on another occasion in Abu Dawud (1577 and 2039), 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah and Muhammad bin al-Muthanna also in Abu Dawud (1577), and Ahmad bin Harb in al-Nasa'i (2244), narrated it from Abu Mu'awiyah, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, from Masruq, from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him). Here they did mention Masruq, but they named Ibrahim (al-Nakha'i) in place of Abu Wa'il.
Variation in the chain: Ya'la bin 'Ubayd narrated it from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), without mentioning Masruq.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (2243) narrated it.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (36/22037 and 22129) and al-Nasa'i (2281) narrated it via the route of 'Asim bin Bahdalah, from Abu Wa'il, from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him); Masruq is not mentioned in it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration of Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar (which mentions Masruq) is also supported by Sufyan al-Thawri, Yahya bin 'Isa al-Ramli, Mufaddal bin Muhalhal and Ya'la bin 'Ubayd.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (22013), Abu Dawud (1578), Ibn Majah (1803), al-Tirmidhi (623) and al-Nasa'i (2242 and 2243) narrated it via their routes through al-A'mash, with this same chain.
