أخبرنا أبو علي محمد بن عليٍّ الواعظ ببُخارى، حدثنا علي بن عبد الله بن مُبشِّرٍ الواسطي، حدثنا أحمد بن سِنَان، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مَهْدي، حدثنا سفيان، عن سعد بن إبراهيم، عن طلحة بن عبد الله بن عَوف، قال: صلَّى ابنُ عباسٍ على جنازةٍ، فقرأ بفاتحة الكتاب، فقلتُ له، فقال: إنَّه من السُّنة، أو من تَمَامِ السُّنة (2).

Talhah bin Abdullah bin Awf states that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) led a funeral prayer and recited Surah al-Fatihah in it. I asked him about this, and he said that it is the Sunnah, or (he said) it is part of the completion of the Sunnah.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of both of them (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it!

(2) إسناده صحيح. سفيان: هو ابن عيينة. ¤ ¤ وأخرجه الترمذي (1027) عن محمد بن بشار، عن عبد الرحمن بن مهدي، بهذا الإسناد.
Grading: (2) Its chain is sahih. Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah and Imam al-Shafi'i are among its narrators. Al-Tirmidhi (1027) also narrated it.
وأخرجه البخاري (1335)، وأبو داود (3198) من طريق محمد بن كثير، عن سفيان بن عيينة، به فاستدراك الحاكم له ذهولٌ منه.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (1335) and Abu Dawud (3198) narrated it via the chain of Muhammad bin Kathir from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah. Al-Hakim's including it as an addition (istidrak) here is an oversight.
