Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 142

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bilal bin al-Harith al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, a man speaks a word pleasing to Allah which he does not even imagine will reach so far, and because of it Allah records His good pleasure for him until the day he meets Him. And indeed, a man speaks a word displeasing to Allah which he does not imagine will reach so far, and because of it Allah records His displeasure for him until the day he meets Him."
Imam al-Hakim says: This does not weaken the consensus that we mentioned earlier; rather, it is further strengthened by the corroboration of a narrator such as Imam Malik, except that concerning it, the same will be said as the experts have said about the addition in fully establishing the chain.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the printed edition the name has been corrupted and written as "Maslamah" with an extra "mim" at its start (whereas the correct name is Salamah).

Grading: On the basis of supporting reports it is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (sahih due to external support).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This particular chain is "munqati'" (broken) between Amr bin Alqamah and Bilal bin al-Harith. According to Imam al-Bukhari (al-Tarikh al-Kabir 2/107), what is correct is that the link of Alqamah is mentioned between them.
Reference / Source: This narration is in the "Muwatta' of Imam Malik" (transmission of Yahya al-Laythi: 2/985). Imam al-Nasa'i narrated it through the chain of Qutaybah bin Sa'id from Malik (Tuhfat al-Ashraf: 2028).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Muhammad bin Ajlan, also in al-Nasa'i, corroborated Imam Malik with this same break (inqita').
