أخبرني أبو الحسن أحمد بن محمد بن سَلَمة العَنَزي، حدثنا عثمان بن سعيد الدَّارمي، حدثنا أصْبَغ بن الفَرَج المِصري، حدثنا عبد الله بن وَهْب، أخبرني يونس، عن ابن شهاب، أنَّ خارجة بن زيد أخبره، أنَّ أُمَّ العلاء - امرأةً من الأنصار قد بايَعَتْ رسول الله ﷺ أخبرته: أنهم اقتَسَموا المهاجرين (1) قُرْعةً، فطارَ لنا عثمانُ بن مَظعُون، فأنزلْناه في أبياتنا، فوَجِعَ وَجَعَه الذي مات فيه، فلما تُوفِّي غُسِّل وكُفِّن في أثوابه، دَخَلَ رسولُ الله ﷺ فقلت: يا عثمانُ بنَ مظعونٍ، رحمةُ الله عليكَ أبا السائب، فشهادتي عليك لقد أكرَمَكَ الله، فقال رسولُ الله ﷺ: "وما يُدريكِ أنَّ الله أكرَمَه؟ " فقالت: بأبي أنتَ وأمي يا رسول الله، فمَنْ؟ فقال رسولُ الله ﷺ: "أمّا هو فقد جاءَه اليقينُ، فوالله إنِّي لأرجو له الخير، واللهِ ما أَدري وأنا رسولُ الله ماذا يُفعَلُ بي" قالت: فواللهِ ما أُزكِّي بعدَه أحدًا أبدًا (1).

Umm al-Ala' (may Allah be pleased with her) - an Ansari woman who had given the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) - narrates that when the Ansar drew lots to host the Muhajirun, Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) fell to our share, and we lodged him in our houses. Then he fell ill with the illness in which he passed away. When he died, was washed and was shrouded in his clothes, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in. I said: "O Uthman bin Maz'un, may the mercy of Allah be upon you, O Abu al-Sa'ib; my testimony about you is that Allah has certainly honoured you." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How do you know that Allah has honoured him?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, may my mother and father be ransomed for you, then who else would it be? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for him, certainty (death) has come to him. By Allah, I hope for good for him; but by Allah, even though I am the Messenger of Allah, I do not know what will be done with me." Umm al-Ala' said: "By Allah, after this I will never (definitively) declare anyone's purity."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it!

Technical note: (1) The manuscripts had "lil-muhajirin"; the correct form is "lil-mu'minin" (for the believers).
(1) إسناده صحيح. يونس: هو ابن يزيد الأيلي، وابن شهاب: هو محمد بن مسلم الزهري. وأخرجه أحمد 45/ (27457)، والبخاري (1243) و (2687) و (3929) و (7003) و (7004) من طرق عن ابن شهاب الزهري، بهذا الإسناد. فاستدراك الحاكم له ذهولٌ منه.
Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih. Yunus al-Ayli and Imam al-Zuhri are among its narrators. Ahmad and al-Bukhari (1243, and elsewhere) narrated it. Al-Hakim's including it as an addition (istidrak) is an oversight on his part here too.
وسيأتي من طريق معمر عن الزهري برقم (3738).
Repetition: It will come later via Ma'mar from al-Zuhri at no. (3738).
وأخرج أحمد 45/ (27459) من طريق سالم أبي النضر، عن خارجة بن زيد، عن أمه قالت: إنَّ عثمان بن مظعون لما قبض، قالت أم خارجة بنت زيد: طبت أبا السائب، فذكره بنحوه. وقد رجَّح الحافظ ابن حجر في "الإصابة" 8/ 439 أن تكون أمه هي نفسها أم العلاء الأنصارية المذكورة في رواية الزهري عن خارجة، وقال: فلا يلزم من كونه أَبهمها في رواية الزهري أن تكون أخرى، فقد يبهم الإنسان نفسه فضلًا عن أمه.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In Ahmad (45/27459) there is also the narration of Kharijah bin Zayd from his mother with the same meaning. According to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, she is Umm al-Ala' herself.
وفي الباب عن ابن عباس سيأتي عند المصنف برقم (4930).
Repetition: On this topic, the narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) will come later at no. (4930).
