Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1408

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Mulaykah narrates that one day Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was coming from the direction of the graveyard. I said to her: O Mother of the Believers, where are you coming from? She said: From the grave of my brother Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr. I said: Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not forbid visiting graves? She said: Yes, he (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden it, but later he commanded that they be visited.

Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (4/78) narrated it with the chain of Imam al-Hakim, through the same intermediaries.
Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la (4871) and Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" narrated it via Muhammad bin al-Minhal.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1570) narrated it with the chain of Rawh bin Ubadah from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) granted permission to visit graves."
Grading: Al-Bayhaqi said that Bistam bin Muslim is alone in narrating it, but we say that Ibn Jurayj narrated something with the same meaning from Ibn Abi Mulaykah: that A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) went to the grave of her brother Abd al-Rahman and wept (no. 6126).
