It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led a funeral prayer, he would make this supplication: 'Allahumma-ghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-iman' (O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those of us present and those absent, our young and our old, and our males and our females. O Allah, whomever of us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever You cause to die, cause him to die upon faith).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it! And it has an authentic supporting narration (shahid) on the condition of Muslim, as follows:

14/ (8809). Grading: (2) Its narrators are trustworthy, but there is severe disagreement over its chain: sometimes it is muttasil (connected), sometimes mursal, sometimes marfu' and sometimes mawquf. It is narrated through different routes from Abu Hurayrah, Aisha, Abu Qatadah and Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with them). The details are in the annotation on the Musnad of Ahmad (14/8809). Technical note: Al-Awza'i refers to Abd al-Rahman bin Amr, and Abu Salamah refers to Ibn Abd al-Rahman. Reference / Source: This connected narration of Abu Hurayrah was narrated by Imam al-Tirmidhi (1024) via Hiql bin Ziyad. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (3201), al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban (3070) narrated it through various routes from al-Awza'i. Reference / Source: Ahmad (14/8809) narrated it via Ayyub bin 'Utbah, who is a weak narrator. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1498) and al-Nasa'i narrated it via Muhammad bin Ishaq, but Ibn Ishaq is a mudallis and did not state that he heard it (he used 'an'anah). (3650). Grading: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it via al-Awza'i as "mursal", and Imam Abu Hatim declared the mursal version correct; in his words, only someone who is not precise in the science of hadith connects it to Abu Hurayrah. Grading: According to Imam al-Bukhari, the narrations of Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah, Aisha and Abu Qatadah are "not preserved", and the most authentic narration on this topic is that of 'Awf bin Malik, which is in Sahih Muslim (963) (the supplication: Allahumma ighfir lahu warhamhu). Technical note: See the narration after it.
Grading: (1) Rather, this too is "ma'lul" (defective), like the preceding narration.
