Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1340

Talhah bin Abdullah bin Awf narrates: I prayed a funeral prayer behind Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and heard him reciting Surah al-Fatihah. When he finished, I took hold of his hand and asked: "Did you recite (al-Fatihah)?" He replied: "Yes, it is a truth and a Sunnah."
It also has a detailed supporting narration (shahid) reported through Ibrahim bin Abi Yahya:

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: (1) In the manuscripts it had become "Sa'id"; the correct name is "Sa'd bin Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf".

Grading: (2) It is a "sahih hadith"; although Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan is weak, Ibn Dizil has corroborated him.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (1335) and al-Nasa'i (2126) narrated it via Muhammad bin Ja'far from Shu'bah.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (1335), Abu Dawud (3198), al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban narrated it via the chains of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah and Ibrahim bin Sa'd.
(Note / Clarification): We say: the narration of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah from Sa'd bin Ibrahim will come later at number (1441).
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1495) and al-Tirmidhi (1026) narrated it via Ibrahim bin Uthman from al-Hakam, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Surah al-Fatihah in the funeral prayer. Imam al-Tirmidhi says that Ibrahim bin Uthman (Abu Shaybah al-Wasiti) is "munkar al-hadith", and that what is correct is that it is the saying of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Reciting Surah al-Fatihah in the funeral prayer is the Sunnah."
