Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1313

Yahya bin Talhah bin Ubaydullah narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him (Talhah) looking sorrowful and asked: What is the matter with you? Perhaps the leadership of your cousin (Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him) has displeased you? He replied: No (and he praised Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him); rather, the matter is that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "There is a word which no servant says at the time of his death except that Allah relieves his distress and his complexion becomes radiant." Nothing prevented me from asking him (peace and blessings be upon him) about that word except that I felt able to ask it (at any time), until he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away. At this Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I know that word. Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What is it? Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you know of any word greater than the word which he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded his uncle to say, namely 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no god but Allah)? Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! That is the very word.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it. As for the error that Muhammad bin Abd al-Wahhab made in narrating it from Mis'ar (that is a separate matter).

Grading: (1) The hadith is sahih. Muhammad bin al-Khalil al-Asbahani, the author's teacher (whom he gave the kunyah Abu 'Abd Allah in more than one place in al-Mustadrak), was mentioned by the author in "Tarikh Naysabur" (as in its "Talkhis" by al-Khalifah al-Naysaburi, p. 105), who described him as mu'addil (one who attests to the integrity of witnesses); those above him are trustworthy. Al-Sha'bi refers to 'Amir bin Sharahil. There is disagreement over this chain on 'Amir al-Sha'bi, and also on Mutarrif:
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (10873) narrated it from 'Ali bin Hujr from 'Ali bin Mushir with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (3/1384) narrated it from Asbat bin Muhammad, and (1386) via the route of Salih bin 'Umar, both from Mutarrif bin Tarif.
Variation in the chain: Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid contradicted them, narrating it from Mutarrif from al-Sha'bi from Yahya bin Talhah, who said: 'Umar saw Talhah grieving, and he mentioned it. Al-Nasa'i (10872) narrated it.
Variation in the chain: Isma'il bin Abi Khalid narrated it from al-Sha'bi, and there is disagreement on him:
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3795), al-Nasa'i (10874) and Ibn Hibban (205) narrated it via the route of Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Wahhab from Mis'ar from Isma'il from al-Sha'bi from Yahya bin Talhah from his mother Su'da al-Murriyyah, who said: 'Umar passed by Talhah (and mentioned the hadith).
Variation in the chain: Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan and Muhammad bin 'Ubayd contradicted Mis'ar:
Reference / Source: Ahmad (1/252) narrated it from Yahya al-Qattan from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid from al-Sha'bi that 'Umar passed by Talhah, without naming anyone between them. Ahmad (252) and al-Nasa'i (10875) also narrated it via the route of Muhammad bin 'Ubayd from Isma'il from a man from al-Sha'bi, who said: 'Umar passed by Talhah. Al-Daraqutni said: Muhammad bin 'Ubayd erred in this; he meant to say: from Isma'il from al-Sha'bi from a man.
Variation in the chain: Mujalid bin Sa'id narrated it from al-Sha'bi from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah, who said: I heard 'Umar saying to Talhah.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (187) narrated it from 'Abd Allah bin Numayr from Mujalid.
Variation in the chain: There is also disagreement on Mujalid; al-Daraqutni mentioned this in "al-'Ilal" (516), along with other variations, and said at the end: the best of them in chain is the hadith of 'Ali bin Mushir and those who followed him, from Mutarrif from al-Sha'bi from Yahya bin Talhah from his father, and Allah knows best.

Technical note: (1) There is a blank space here in the manuscripts. He is referring here to the narration of Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Wahhab from Mis'ar bin Kidam from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid from Yahya bin Talhah from his mother Su'da al-Murriyyah, who said: 'Umar passed by Talhah (the hadith). We say: al-Daraqutni also considered this chain good (hasan) in "al-'Ilal", and said: if it is preserved, then Yahya bin Talhah retained it from both his father and his mother, and Allah knows best.
