Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1251

Ata narrates from someone whom he trusts (meaning Sayyidah Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her), who said: "The sun went into eclipse in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for a long time. Leading the people in prayer, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand and then bow, then stand and then bow, then stand and then bow. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) led two rak'ahs, with three bowings in each rak'ah; he (peace and blessings be upon him) made the third bowing and then prostrated. On that day, because of the long standing, some men began to faint, until buckets of water were poured over them. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed he said: 'Allahu Akbar,' and when he raised his head he said: 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears the one who praises Him), until the sun became bright. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Indeed the sun and the moon do not go into eclipse because of anyone's death or life; rather, they are two of the signs of Allah by which He makes His servants fear. So when they go into eclipse, hasten in alarm to prayer.'"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with these words. Imam Muslim recorded it through the hadith of Mu'adh bin Hisham, from his father, from Qatadah, from Ata, from Ubayd bin Umayr, with words other than these.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) There is an error in its chain; the correct link is "'Ata' from 'Ubayd bin 'Umayr", and a name has probably dropped out of al-Hakim's copy.
Grading: This narration is ma'lul (defective), because 'Ubayd bin 'Umayr, going against all the other narrators, described a form that contradicts the majority (four bowings and four prostrations).
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1177) narrated it through 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah with the link of 'Ubayd bin 'Umayr.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (1866) narrated it through Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah.
Reference / Source: Muslim (901)(6) narrated it through Muhammad bin Bakr from Ibn Jurayj.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (41/24472) narrated it through Qatadah: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) made three bowings in each rak'ah."
Variation in the chain: Mu'adh, the student (and son) of Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, narrated it as marfu', while others kept it mawquf on 'A'ishah (as her own statement).
Reference / Source: Muslim (901)(7), al-Nasa'i (1867) and Ibn Hibban narrated it as marfu' through Mu'adh bin Hisham (6 bowings, 4 prostrations).
Grading: Waki' and Yahya al-Qattan (al-Nasa'i 1868) narrated it as "mawquf" on 'A'ishah, and this is the more likely.
