Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1235

Thabit narrates from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not raise his hands in any of his supplications except in the prayer for rain (istisqa)." Shu'bah said: I asked Thabit: "Did you hear this from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said: "Subhan Allah!" I asked again: "Did you hear this from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He said again: "Subhan Allah!"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and Imam Muslim recorded it through the hadith of Yahya bin Abi Bukayr from Shu'bah.

Reference / Source: Ahmad (20/13187) and al-Nasa'i narrated it through Shu'bah from Thabit from Anas that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would raise his hands in supplication so high that the whiteness of his armpits could be seen. When Shu'bah mentioned this to 'Ali bin Zayd, he said that this was about istisqa' (the prayer for rain).

Grading: (1) The wording of Muslim (895)(5) is: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raising his hands in supplication until the whiteness of his armpits was seen." There is no mention of istisqa' in it; al-Bukhari also mentioned it mu'allaq in the same way.
