It is narrated about Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he stood up after two rak'ahs (instead of sitting for the first tashahhud). The people said Subhan Allah to draw his attention, but he remained standing upright. Then when he finished the prayer, he made the two prostrations of forgetfulness and said: Did you think that I would sit down (again upon being reminded)? I only did as I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) doing.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (2) The narrators are thiqah, but there is disagreement over whether it is marfu' or mawquf; according to al-Daraqutni its being "mawquf" is correct. Abu Mu'awiyah refers to al-Darir. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (2/344) narrated it through the chain of Imam al-Hakim by the same route. Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la, Ibn Khuzaymah and al-Bayhaqi narrated it through routes from Abu Mu'awiyah. According to Ibn Khuzaymah and Yahya bin Ma'in, its being marfu' is an error and mistake of Abu Mu'awiyah. Grading: Sufyan al-Thawri, Waki', Ibn al-Mundhir and Zuhayr narrated it from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid as "mawquf" (without mentioning the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him). Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq (3486), Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/34) and al-Tahawi narrated it as "mawquf" on Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas through the route of Bayan bin Bishr.
