It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that a blind man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Supplicate to Allah that He grant me well-being (my sight). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, I will postpone it, which is better for you; and if you wish, I will supplicate." He said: Please supplicate. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to make ablution well, pray two rak'ahs, and make this supplication: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka wa atawajjahu ilayka bi-nabiyyika Muhammadin nabiyyi al-rahmah, ya Muhammadu inni tawajjahtu bika ila rabbi fi hajati hadhihi fa-tuqda li, Allahumma shaffi'hu fiyya wa shaffi'ni fihi' ("O Allah! I ask You and turn to You through Your Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet of mercy. O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Through you I have turned to my Lord in this need of mine, so that it may be fulfilled for me. O Allah! Accept his (peace and blessings be upon him) intercession for me, and accept my request for him (peace and blessings be upon him).")
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih. There is disagreement in the narrations from Abu Ja'far al-Madini; Shu'bah and Hammad bin Salamah narrated it by way of 'Umarah bin Khuzaymah, as here and at number (1930). Variation in the chain: Rawh bin al-Qasim (number 1950) and Hisham al-Dastuwa'i narrated it by way of Abu Umamah bin Sahl. Grading: Abu Zur'ah held the narration of Shu'bah to be preponderant, whereas Ibn Abi Hatim preferred the narration of Rawh because of Hisham's corroboration of it. Grading: According to 'Ali bin al-Madini, the narration of Rawh bin al-Qasim is better preserved. General principle: It is possible that Abu Ja'far heard it from both ('Umarah and Abu Umamah), and both are thiqah, so both versions may be correct. Technical note: Shu'bah refers to Ibn al-Hajjaj and Abu Ja'far al-Madini refers to al-Khatmi ('Umayr bin Yazid). Reference / Source: Ahmad (28/17240), Ibn Majah (1385), al-Tirmidhi (3578) and al-Nasa'i narrated it through the chain of 'Uthman bin 'Umar. Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih gharib". Reference / Source: Ahmad (17242) and al-Nasa'i also narrated it through the route of Hammad bin Salamah.
