Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1151

حدَّثَناه أبو عليٍّ الحافظ، أخبرنا عبد الله بن سليمان، حدثنا أحمد بن صالح، حدثنا عبد الله بن وهب، حدثنا سليمان بن بلال، عن صالح بن كَيْسان، عن عبد الله بن الفَضْل، عن أبي سَلَمة بن عبد الرحمن وعبد الرحمن الأعرج، عن أبي هريرة، عن رسول الله ﷺ قال: "لا تُوتِروا بثلاثٍ ولا تَشبَّهوا بصلاة المغرب، أوتِروا بخمسٍ، أو بسَبعٍ" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not pray witr with three rak'ahs, and do not make it resemble the Maghrib prayer in this way; rather, pray witr with five or seven rak'ahs."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(1) إسناده صحيح. أبو علي الحافظ شيخ المصنف: هو الحسين بن علي، وعبد الله بن سليمان: هو ابن الأشعث السجستاني.
Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih. Abu Ali al-Hafiz, the shaykh of the author (al-Hakim), is al-Husayn bin Ali, and Abd Allah bin Sulayman is the son of Abu Dawud.
وأخرجه ابن حبان (2429) من طريق حرملة بن يحيى، عن عبد الله بن وهب، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (2429) narrated it through the chain of Harmalah bin Yahya from Ibn Wahb.
