Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1131

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Indeed, witr (prayer) is not binding like your obligatory prayers, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed witr and then said: "O people of the Qur'an, pray witr, for Allah is Witr (One) and He loves witr."
This hadith has several supporting narrations (shawahid).

Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) The chain is strong (qawi) on account of Asim bin Damrah. Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar al-Utaridi and Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i are among its narrators.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (1169), al-Tirmidhi (453), Abd Allah bin Ahmad and al-Nasa'i narrated it through routes from Abu Bakr bin Ayyash. Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan".
Grading: The statement of Ali, "Witr is not binding like the obligatory prayers", was narrated by Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi, Abd Allah bin Ahmad and al-Nasa'i through routes from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i as mawquf (a statement of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Its marfu' part (the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) was narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud (1416) and al-Nasa'i through the chains of Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah and Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated through the chain of al-Hajjaj bin Artah that Ali was asked whether Witr is obligatory, and he said: "Not like the obligatory prayers, but it is a sunnah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Companions always kept up."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "Allah is Witr (One) and loves the witr" is supported by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in al-Bukhari (6410) and Muslim.
Reference / Source: The narration of Ibn Mas'ud, "O people of the Quran, pray Witr", is in Ibn Majah (1170), but its chain is da'if.
