Wahb bin Kaysan narrates: I was in Makkah during the governorship of Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) when Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha fell on a Friday. He delayed going out until the day had advanced; then he came out, ascended the pulpit and delivered the sermon, making it long, then he led two rak'ahs and did not pray the Friday prayer. Some people of Banu Umayyah objected to him over this. When this reached Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: Ibn al-Zubayr has acted exactly in accordance with the Sunnah. When this reached Ibn al-Zubayr, he said: I saw Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), when two Eids came together, do the same.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih. Abu al-Muthanna refers to Mu'adh, and Yahya refers to al-Qattan. Reference / Source: Ibn al-Mundhir narrated it in "al-Awsat" through the chain of Yahya al-Dhuhli from Musaddad, by this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (1807) and Ibn Khuzaymah narrated it by way of al-Qattan, but al-Nasa'i did not mention the account about Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/186) and Ibn Khuzaymah narrated it through routes from Abd al-Hamid bin Ja'far. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1071) narrated it through the chain of Sulayman al-A'mash from Ata' that when Eid and Jumu'ah fell on the same day, Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the prayer at the start of the day; then we went for Jumu'ah but he did not come out, so we prayed individually. When Ibn Abbas arrived, he said: "He acted according to the Sunnah." Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1072) narrated it through the chain of Ibn Jurayj from Ata' that in the time of Ibn al-Zubayr, when Eid and Jumu'ah came together, he said: "Two Eids have come together on one day." So he combined them and led two rak'ahs in the early morning, and did not pray any further prayer (Jumu'ah) until Asr. (1076). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic, the narrations of Zayd bin Arqam and Abu Hurayrah have passed earlier in the Book of Jumu'ah at numbers (1075) and (1076).
