Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1084

It is narrated about Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he was in Makkah and had prayed the Friday prayer, he would move forward and pray two rak'ahs, then move further forward and pray four rak'ahs; but when he was in Madinah, after praying the Friday prayer he would return to his house and pray two rak'ahs there, and he would not pray voluntary prayers in the mosque. When he was asked about this, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do so.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording; rather, both of them agreed on the hadith of Ibn Umar about praying two rak'ahs at home, and Imam Muslim alone narrated that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray four rak'ahs after the Friday prayer. Ibn Jurayj corroborated Yazid bin Abi Habib in his narration from Ata:

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih. Abu al-Muwajjih refers to Muhammad al-Fazari, and Ata' refers to Ibn Abi Rabah.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1130) narrated it through the chain of Muhammad bin Abd al-Aziz from al-Fadl bin Musa, by this same chain.
Technical note: See also the narration after this one.

Reference / Source: (2) Al-Bukhari (937) and Muslim (882) narrated it through the chain of Nafi' from Ibn Umar.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (1165) narrated it from Salim from Ibn Umar, mentioning two rak'ahs each after Zuhr, Maghrib, Isha and Jumu'ah.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) Imam Muslim did not narrate this (the matter of four rak'ahs) from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); rather, Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi narrated from him "six rak'ahs" (first two, then four).
