Musnad Ahmad

Abu Muslima (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), "Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ever pray in his shoes?" He replied, "Yes!"

Abu Muslima (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to begin the recitation with Bismillah or with Alhamdulillah? He replied, "You have asked me a question about which I do not remember anything at the moment."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes visit all his pure wives in a single night with only one bath.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever deliberately attributes a false statement to me, he should make his abode in Hell.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and warned the people. In the meantime, a man stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah! When will the Hour (Day of Judgment) come?" Signs of displeasure appeared on the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so we said to him, "Sit down, you have asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a question which he did not like." This happened three times in the same way. Finally, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, "O brother! What preparation have you made for the Hour?" He replied, "I have prepared that I love Allah and His Messenger." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You will be with the one you love on the Day of Judgment."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Rubayyi‘, who was the paternal aunt of Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), broke the tooth of a girl. Then her family offered compensation to the family of the girl, but they refused. Then they asked them for forgiveness, but they also refused to forgive and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and demanded retribution (qisas). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered qisas. In the meantime, her brother and Hazrat Anas’s (may Allah be pleased with him) uncle, Anas bin Nadr, arrived and said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Will the tooth of Rubayyi‘ be broken?” By the One Who has sent you with the truth, her tooth will not be broken.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Anas! The decision of the Book of Allah is qisas.” In the meantime, they became pleased and forgave them and abandoned the demand for qisas. Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “There are some servants of Allah who, if they swear an oath by Allah regarding something, Allah certainly fulfills their oath.”

Asim Ahwal (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): Is Qunoot before or after Ruku? He replied: Before Ruku. I said: Some people think that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Qunoot after Ruku? He replied: They are mistaken; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited it after Ruku only for one month, during which he supplicated against those who martyred his reciter companions.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called us to distribute among us the wealth that had come from Bahrain. But we said, "First, set aside an equal share for our Muhajir brothers." Seeing their spirit of selflessness, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "After me, you will face favoritism, but you should remain patient until you meet me." The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "We will be patient."

Ammar bin Asim, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once I was present in the service of Hazrat Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, in Kufa and asked him about Nabidh. He replied that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade (the use of) Dubba and Muzaffat.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! How will people be raised on their faces?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "The One who has the power to make them walk on their feet is also able to make them walk on their faces."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once during the Prophethood, a Bedouin came and urinated in the Prophet's Mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Leave him," and ordered that a bucket of water be poured over it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: On the Day of Resurrection, every poor and wealthy person will wish that he had been given only as much in the world as was sufficient for his needs.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man who was driving a sacrificial animal. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him to ride it. He said, "It is a sacrificial animal." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Even if it is a sacrificial animal."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to his bed, he would say: "All praise is due to Allah who has fed us, given us drink, sufficed us, and provided us with shelter. How many are there who have no one to suffice them or provide them with shelter."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the prayer had been established when a man came quickly, his breath was heavy, and upon reaching the row he said, "Alhamdulillah hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubaarakan feehi." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he asked, "Who among you spoke?" He had said a good thing. So that man said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I spoke. I was coming quickly and when I reached near the row, I said this phrase." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I saw twelve angels rushing towards it to see who would be the first to raise this phrase."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I have performed prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the three caliphs; these noble persons would begin the recitation in prayer with "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alamin."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! When will the Hour (Day of Judgment) be established?" At that time, the Iqamah had been pronounced, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to lead the prayer. After finishing the prayer, he said, "Where is the one who asked about the Hour?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I am here." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "What preparation have you made for the Hour?" He replied, "I have not prepared many good deeds, prayers, or fasts, but I do have love for Allah and His Messenger." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "A person will be with the one whom he loves on the Day of Judgment." Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says, "I have never seen the Muslims as happy as they were on that day after accepting Islam."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that at the time of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) arrival in Madinah Munawwarah, his age was ten years. He says that his mother used to encourage him to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), therefore, when the command of veil (purdah) was revealed, I knew the situation of that time better than anyone else. That night, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had seclusion with Hazrat Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), and in the morning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was a bridegroom. After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invited the people, they came, ate food, and left, but some people remained sitting there and stayed for quite a while, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself got up and went outside. I also went outside so that they might leave as well. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and I, while walking, stopped at the threshold of Hazrat Aisha’s (may Allah be pleased with her) chamber. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) thought that perhaps those people had now left, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, and I was with him. When we saw, indeed those people had gone. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered inside and hung a curtain, and Allah revealed the verse of hijab.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If the son of Adam had two valleys full of gold, he would desire a third one, and nothing fills the mouth of the son of Adam except the dust of the grave. And whoever repents, Allah accepts his repentance.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I performed two rak'ahs with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the plain of Mina, and also with Hazrat Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and in the early period of the caliphate of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) I also performed two rak'ahs.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that one day we were sitting in the mosque with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man riding a camel arrived. He made the camel sit in the mosque, dismounted, tied the she-camel with a rope, and then began to ask, "Who among you is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?" At that time, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the middle, reclining on a cushion. We replied, "This fair-skinned man who is reclining on the cushion is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." That man turned towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O son of Abdul Muttalib!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes, I am listening (state your purpose)." The man said, "I want to ask you something, and I will be a bit harsh in questioning, so do not be angry with me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Ask whatever you wish." He said, "I ask you by the Lord of you and those before you, has Allah sent you as a Prophet for all people?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes, by Allah! (He has sent me as a Prophet for all people.)" He said, "I ask you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to offer five prayers in the day and night?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes, by Allah." He said, "I ask you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to fast in the month of Ramadan every year?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes, by Allah." He said, "I ask you by Allah, has Allah commanded you to take zakat from our wealthy and distribute it among our poor?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes, by Allah!" Upon hearing this, the man said, "I believe in everything you have brought (from Allah), and I am the representative of my people, and my name is Dhamam bin Tha’labah."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to write a letter to the Romans, the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) submitted that those people only read sealed letters. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a silver ring made. Its whiteness is still before my eyes. The inscription on it was: "Muhammad Rasul Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A person grows old, but two things always remain in him: desire and hope.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: The real good is the good of the Hereafter, or he would say: O Allah! There is no good except the good of the Hereafter, so forgive the Ansar and the Muhajireen.

Abu Sadaqah, who was the freed slave of Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), says: I asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) about the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Zuhr prayer at the time of decline (of the sun), the Asr prayer between these two prayers, the Maghrib prayer at the time of sunset, and the Isha prayer after the disappearance of twilight, and the Fajr prayer when the dawn would break until the eyes could see clearly.

Yasar says that I was walking with Thabit Banani, and on the way he passed by some children, he greeted them with salam and said: It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some children who were playing, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted them with salam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was branding the ear of a goat.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the Asr prayer when the sun was bright and in the shape of its circle.

Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), "O Abu Hamzah! Tell us about some strange incident in which you yourself were present and you are not narrating it from anyone else?" He replied, "Once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led the Zuhr prayer and then went and sat at the place where Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) used to come to him. Then Hazrat Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came and gave the adhan for Asr. Every person who had a house in Madinah Munawwarah got up and went for relieving himself and for ablution. Some Muhajireen remained who had no house in Madinah. A large vessel of water was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) placed his palms in it, but the vessel was not spacious enough, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) placed only four fingers in it and said, 'Come close and perform ablution from it.' At that time, the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in the vessel. So all of them performed ablution from it, and there was not a single person left who did not perform ablution." I asked, "O Abu Hamzah! In your opinion, how many people were there?" He replied, "Between seventy and eighty."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was very fond of pumpkin.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: On the Day of Resurrection, the people with the longest necks will be the muezzins.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn, when Allah granted the spoils of Banu Hawazin to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the Prophet (peace be upon him) began giving one hundred camels each to every man of the Quraysh, some of the Ansar said, "May Allah forgive the Prophet (peace be upon him), he is giving to the Quraysh and ignoring us, while the drops of blood are still dripping from our swords." When the Prophet (peace be upon him) learned of this, he called the Ansari companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and gathered them in a tent made of leather, and did not allow anyone else to enter. When they had all gathered, the Prophet (peace be upon him) came and said, "What are these things I have heard about you?" They replied that it was true and they had not lied. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Are you not pleased that people go away with wealth and property, and you return to your homes with the Messenger of Allah? If all the people were to walk in one valley or mountain pass, and the Ansar in another, I would choose the valley and mountain pass of the Ansar."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in Jannat al-Baqi', when a man called out to someone by saying "Abul Qasim." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned around and looked back, so the man said, "I did not mean you." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Name yourselves after my name, but do not take my kunya (Abul Qasim) as your kunya."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Ansar used to say, "We are the ones who pledged allegiance to Muhammad (peace be upon him) for jihad as long as we are alive." And the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to reply, "O Allah! The good of the Hereafter is the real good, so forgive the Ansar and the Muhajireen."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Perform bowing and prostration completely, for by Allah! I see you even from behind my back.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was the lightest and the most complete.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man driving a sacrificial animal. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him to ride it. He said, "This is a sacrificial animal." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him two or three times to ride it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer two white, horned rams as sacrifice, and he would mention the name of Allah and say Takbeer. I saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would slaughter them with his own hand and would place his foot on their side.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that some people from the tribes of ‘Ukl and ‘Uraynah became Muslim, but the climate of Madinah did not suit them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them, “If you go to our camels and drink their milk, perhaps you will recover.” So they did so, but when they became healthy, they reverted to disbelief and apostatized. They killed the Muslim shepherd of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and drove away the Prophet’s camels. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent companions after them, and they were captured and brought before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides, their eyes be branded with hot irons, and they were left in the rocky area until they died.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) intended to write letters to the non-Arabs, the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) submitted that those people only read sealed letters. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had a silver ring made. Its whiteness is still before my eyes. The inscription on it was: "Muhammad Rasul Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)."
