Hadith 6872
Abdullah bin Buraidah says that Ubaidullah bin Ziyad had doubt about the existence of the Hawd al-Kawthar. Among his companions, Abu Sabrah said to him: "Your father once gave me some wealth and sent me to Sayyid Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). I met Sayyidna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he narrated to me a hadith which he himself had heard from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He dictated that hadith to me, and I wrote it down with my own hand without omitting or adding a single letter." He said: "I swear to you, bring me that writing, even if you have to ride your horse to exhaustion." So I mounted the horse and spurred it on. I brought that writing, and I was drenched in sweat. In it was written that Sayyidna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allah Almighty does not like any kind of indecency, whether casual or deliberate. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the Hour will not be established until indecency becomes widespread everywhere, severing of ties, wrongdoing, and bad neighbors become common, and until the treacherous is considered trustworthy and the trustworthy is considered treacherous.' And he said: 'By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the example of a Muslim is like a piece of gold: if its owner blows on it, it does not change or become deficient.' And by the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the example of a Muslim is like a honeybee: it eats good and produces good; when it lands, it neither breaks nor corrupts.' And he said: 'Behold! I have a Hawd (cistern), its length and width are equal, from Aylah to Makkah, which is about a month's journey. Its drinking vessels are as numerous as the stars. Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Whoever drinks a sip from it will never feel thirsty again.' Ubaidullah bin Ziyad took that manuscript and kept it with him, which made me anxious. Then I met Yahya bin Ya'mar and complained to him about it. He said: 'By Allah, I remember it better than any surah of the Qur'an.' So he narrated that hadith to me just as it was written in that manuscript.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, that I memorized the Holy Qur'an and recited the entire Qur'an in one night. When the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, found out, he said: "I fear that after some time you will become weary. Complete the recitation of the Holy Qur'an once every month." I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to benefit from my strength and youth." This continued, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stopped at twenty, ten, and seven days. I also requested permission for less than seven days, but the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, refused.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know that I always fast during the day and stand in prayer at night. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me, or perhaps we met by chance, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you the one about whom I have been told that you say, 'I will stand in prayer every night and fast every day'?" Do not do so, for your eyes have a right over you, your self and your family have a right over you. Therefore, stand in prayer and also sleep, fast and also leave fasting sometimes, and fast only one day in every ten days; you will have the reward of additional nine fasts. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah! I have the strength to do more than that.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then fast like Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him)." I asked, 'O Prophet of Allah! How did Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him) fast?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He would fast one day and leave fasting the next day, and he would not flee when facing the enemy." I said, 'O Prophet of Allah! How can I do this?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said twice: "Whoever fasts continuously has not really fasted."

A man from Banu Hudhail says that I saw Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), his house was outside the Haram and the mosque of the Haram was inside. I was with him when his gaze fell upon Abu Jahl’s daughter, Umm Sa’eedah, who had hung a bow around her neck and was walking in a masculine manner. Sayyiduna Abdullah said, “Who is this woman?” I told him, “This is Abu Jahl’s daughter, Umm Sa’eedah.” Upon this, he said: “I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Women who imitate men and men who imitate women are not from among us.”

Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman says that once I went to the service of Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). He thought that I was the son of Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah, so he asked me about her. I told him that I was the son of Kalbiyah. Then he said: "Once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to my house and said: 'I have come to know that you recite the entire Qur'an in one day and night? Recite only one Qur'an in a month.' I said, 'I feel I have more strength than that.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Then complete it in fifteen days.' I said, 'I feel I have more strength than that.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Then complete it in seven nights, and do not increase upon that.' After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'I have come to know that you always fast?' I said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah!' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Fast three days in every month.' I said, 'I feel I have more strength than that.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept giving me some concession until finally he said: 'Then fast one day and leave one day, like Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him). This is the best fast, and he would not break his promise, nor would he flee when facing the enemy.'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I presented myself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Give me a command regarding fasting." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you fast one day, you will get the reward of nine." I requested an increase in this, so he said: "If you fast two days, you will get the reward of eight." I requested further increase, so he said: "If you fast three days, you will get the reward of seven." Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept decreasing until finally he said: "The best way of fasting is that of Sayyiduna Dawood (peace be upon him), so fast one day and leave one day." When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) became old, he used to say, "Alas! If only I had been content with the command of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."

The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then fast three days every week." I imposed hardship, so hardship was imposed upon me. I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! I have the strength for something better than this." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then fast one day and leave one day; this is the most moderate way of fasting, and this is the way of Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him)." Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your soul has a right over you, and your family also has a right over you." The narrator says that then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) continued to fast according to this method until he became old and weak. At that time, he used to say, "Now I prefer to accept the concession of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) more than my family and wealth."

Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman says that once I went to the service of Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). He thought that I was the son of Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah, so he asked me about her. I told him that I was the son of Kalbiyah and had come to you to ask what advice the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had given you. He said: "During the blessed era of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I used to say that I would complete the entire Qur'an in one day and night and would always fast. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know of this, he came to my house and said: 'I have heard that you recite the entire Qur'an in one day? Recite only one Qur'an in a month.' I said, 'I feel I have more strength than that.' The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Then complete it in seven nights and do not add to that.' After that, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I have heard that you always fast?' I said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah!' The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Fast three days in every month.' I said, 'I feel I have more strength than that.' The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Then fast on Mondays and Thursdays.' I said, 'O Prophet of Allah, I feel I have more strength than that.' The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Then fast one day and leave one day, like Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him). This is the best fast, and he did not break his promise, nor did he flee when facing the enemy.' Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left."

Abu Zar’ah bin Amr, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once in Madinah Munawwarah, three Muslims were sitting with Marwan. They heard him saying regarding the signs of the Hour that the very first sign is the emergence of Dajjal. On their return, they went to Sayyiduna Ibn Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, and narrated to him the hadith they had heard from Marwan. He said: “He has not said anything strong. I have heard from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, a hadith regarding this which I have not forgotten till now. I heard the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, say that the very first sign of the Hour is the rising of the sun from the west, then at forenoon the emergence of the Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard). Whichever of these two signs appears first, the other will follow immediately after it. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, who had also read the previous heavenly books, used to say: I think the sun will rise from the west first. The detail of this is that every day when the sun sets, it comes under the Throne of Allah and prostrates, then seeks permission to return, and it is granted permission. When Allah wills that it should rise from the west, it will, as usual, prostrate under the Throne, and when it seeks permission to return, it will not be answered. This will happen three times. When as much of the night passes as Allah wills, and the sun realizes that even if it is granted permission now, it will not be able to reach the east, it will say: O Lord! How far is the east? Who will take me to the people? When the horizon becomes like a ring, it will be granted permission to return, and it will be said to it: Rise from this very place. Thus, it will rise upon the people from the west. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, recited this verse: The day when some of the signs of your Lord will come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before.”

These women are an overwhelming evil even for the one who always prevails over others. Benefit: Its complete explanation is coming in the next narration.

Nazlah bin Tareef says that there was a man from his tribe who was called A’shi, his real name was Abdullah bin A’war. The woman in his marriage was named Mu’azah. Once, A’shi set out from a place called Hajr in the month of Rajab to bring grain for his family. In his absence, his wife became angry with him, ran away from home, and took refuge with a man from her tribe whose name was Mutarrif bin Bahsal... He gave her his protection. When A’shi returned, he did not find his wife at home. He found out that she had run away in anger and was now under the protection of Mutarrif bin Bahsal. Upon hearing this, A’shi went to Mutarrif and said, “O my cousin! Is my wife Mu’azah with you? Hand her over to me.” He replied, “She is not with me, and even if she were, I would not hand her over to you.” In fact, Mutarrif was more powerful than him. So A’shi left there and came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and, reciting these verses, sought his protection:

“O leader of the people and giver to the Arabs! I have come to you with a complaint about a foul-mouthed woman. She is like a female wolf who deceives in the shadow of a mirage. In the month of Rajab, I went out in search of grain for her, but behind my back, she showed me the scene of quarrel and escape. She broke her promise, wagged her tail, and put me in great difficulty. And these women are an overwhelming evil, even for the one who always prevails.”

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) began to repeat his last sentence: “These women are an overwhelming evil, even for the one who always prevails over others.” After this, A’shi complained about his wife and told the Prophet (peace be upon him) the whole story, including that she was now with a man from their own tribe named Mutarrif bin Bahsal. Upon this, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) wrote a letter to Mutarrif, saying, “See, hand over this man’s wife Mu’azah to him.”

When the letter of the Prophet (peace be upon him) reached him and was read out to him, he said to the woman, “Mu’azah, this is a letter from the Prophet (peace be upon him) concerning you, so I am handing you over to him.” She said, “Take a promise from him for me,” and then he handed her over to him.

Upon this, A’shi recited these verses:

“By your life, Mu’azah, my love for you is not such that it could be changed by any color or altered by the passage of time, nor is the evil of that act which you committed, while you were deceived by misguided people, and they kept whispering to you behind my back.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that I saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) standing on his mount in the plain of Mina. Meanwhile, a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I thought that shaving the head comes before sacrifice, so I had my head shaved before sacrificing?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Go and perform the sacrifice, there is no harm." Another man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I thought that sacrifice comes before stoning, so I performed the sacrifice before stoning?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Now go and perform the stoning, there is no harm." On that day, for every question of this nature that was asked to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he replied, "Now do it, there is no harm."

Farzdaq bin Hanan once said to his companions, "Shall I not narrate to you a hadith which my ears have heard, my heart has preserved, and I have not forgotten it till now? Once, I set out with Ubaidullah bin Hida on the road to Syria. We passed by Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). After that, while mentioning the hadith, he said: 'A brave and harsh-natured Bedouin from your tribe came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Where should migration be made? Is it wherever you are, or towards a specific region? Is this command for a particular people, or will migration cease after your passing?' The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent for a while. Then he asked, 'Where is the person who asked about migration?' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah! I am here.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'When you establish prayer and continue to give zakat, then you are a muhajir (migrant), even if your death occurs in Hadramaut, which is a region of Yamamah.' Then that man stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Tell me, will the clothes of the people of Paradise be made, or will they be extracted by splitting the fruit of Paradise?' The people were amazed at the Bedouin's question. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'What amazes you? An ignorant man is asking a scholar.' Then, after remaining silent for a while, he said, 'Where is the one who asked about the clothes of the people of Paradise?' He said, 'I am here.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'The clothes of the people of Paradise will be extracted by splitting the fruit of Paradise.'"

I have come to you to ask about the ruling concerning a lost camel?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has its hoof and its water-skin with it; it eats the leaves of trees and drinks the water of the valleys by itself, and it will reach its owner on its own, so leave it so that it may reach its destination by itself." He asked: "What is the ruling concerning a lost goat?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Either you will take it, or your brother will take it, or a wolf will take it. Include it among your goats so that it may reach its purpose." He asked: "What is the ruling for a goat that is protected in its pasture if someone steals it?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Double its price and punishment, and if it is stolen from the enclosure, then the hand will be cut off if it reaches the value of a shield." He asked: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the ruling for a fallen item that we find on the road in a populated area?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Announce it for a full year; if its owner comes, hand it over to him, otherwise it is yours." He said: "And if the same thing is found in a deserted place?" He said: "In that and in buried treasure, one-fifth is obligatory."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Allah Almighty will not take away knowledge by snatching it from among the people, but He will take away knowledge by taking away the scholars. Until, when no scholar remains, people will take the ignorant as their leaders, and they will be asked for religious rulings, and they will issue fatwas without knowledge. As a result, they will go astray themselves and will lead others astray as well.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are two qualities that lead to Paradise; they are very easy and require very little effort." The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What are those two things?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One is that after every obligatory prayer, say 'Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, SubhanAllah' ten times each. The second is that when you reach your bed, say 'SubhanAllah, Allahu Akbar, and Alhamdulillah' one hundred times." If you add up the numbers for the five prayers and at night, these words will be uttered two hundred and fifty times by the tongue, but in the scale of deeds, they will be equal to two thousand five hundred. Now, who among you commits two thousand five hundred sins in a day and night?" The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked, "How are these words few for the one who acts upon them?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satan comes to one of you during prayer and makes him busy with various tasks, and he gets entangled in them and does not say these words. Similarly, he comes to him at bedtime and puts him to sleep in such a way that he does not say these words at that time either." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) counting these words on his fingers."
