When a woman named Umm Ya'qub from the tribe of Banu Asad heard this, she came to him and said, "By Allah! I have thoroughly searched the Mushaf between its two covers, but I have not found this command anywhere in it." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Did you find this verse in it: «﴿وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا﴾» [الحشر : 7] 'Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you from, abstain from it'?" She said, "Yes!" He said, "Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden these things." The woman said, "What if the women of your household do this?" Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Go and see." The woman went to his house, then came back and said, "I did not see anything objectionable there." It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was clinging to the covering of the Ka'bah when three men came. One of them was a Thaqafi and the other two were from the tribe of Quraysh, who were his sons-in-law. They had a lot of fat on their bellies but very little understanding in their hearts. They began to talk quietly among themselves, which I could not hear. Meanwhile, one of them said: What do you think, does Allah hear our conversations? The second said: I think that when we speak loudly, He hears us, and when we do not raise our voices, He does not hear us. The third said: If He can hear something, then He can hear everything. I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so Allah Almighty revealed this verse: « ﴿وَمَا كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَتِرُونَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ عَلَيْكُمْ سَمْعُكُمْ وَلَا أَبْصَارُكُمْ وَلَا جُلُودُكُمْ . . . . . فَمَا هُمْ مِنَ الْمُعْتَبِينَ﴾ » [فصلت : 22-24] "And you conceal things so that your ears, eyes, and skins may not bear witness against you... so they are not among those who are forgiven."

I began to strike him with my sword, which was blunt; it struck his hand and his sword fell. I picked up his sword and struck him with it until I killed him. Then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "Abu Jahl has been killed." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Swear by Allah, besides whom there is no deity." I swore, and this happened three times. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was walking with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a field in Madinah Munawwarah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was walking, leaning on his staff. As we walked, we passed by a group of Jews. They began saying to one another, "Ask him about the soul," but some among them forbade the others from asking. Nevertheless, they asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the soul and said, "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), what is the soul?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood, leaning on his staff, and I realized that revelation was descending upon him. When that state ended, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: « ﴿وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا﴾ » [الإسراء : 85] "They ask you concerning the soul. Say: The soul is of the command of my Lord, and you have been given only a little knowledge." Upon hearing this, they began saying to one another, "Did we not tell you not to ask him?"
Hadith 4249
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whenever two things were presented before Ibn Sumayyah, he would choose the one which was more guided and rightly directed among them."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I met a woman in a garden, I pulled her towards myself, embraced her, kissed her, and did everything with her except for intercourse. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent for a while, then Allah revealed this verse: «﴿وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ طَرَفَيِ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ ذَلِكَ ذِكْرَى لِلذَّاكِرِينَ﴾» [هود : 114] "Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at some hours of the night. Indeed, good deeds erase bad deeds. That is a reminder for those who remember." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is this command specific to him? He replied: "No! Rather, this ruling is for every person of my Ummah who commits such an act."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once, in the plain of Mina, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) related this hadith to us while he was reclining against a red tent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Are you pleased and satisfied that you will be one fourth of the people of Paradise?” We replied: Yes! Then he asked: “Are you pleased to be one third?” We again replied in the affirmative. He said: “By Him in Whose hand is my soul, I hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise. And I will tell you why the number of Muslims will be few on that day: in fact, on that day, Muslims among the people will be like a white hair on the skin of a black ox, or like a black hair on the skin of a red ox. And only that person will enter Paradise who is a Muslim.”

We entered his house, and one of us said, "We have not come to visit you at this time; rather, we have come to you in anxiety after hearing the news (that all copies of the Noble Qur'an except those prepared by Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani, may Allah be pleased with him, are to be destroyed)." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "This Qur'an was revealed to your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) upon seven doors, in seven letters (modes of recitation), whereas the previous books were revealed through one door, in one letter. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) was making this supplication: “O Allah! Grant me benefit from my noble husband, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), my father Abu Sufyan, and my brother Mu’awiyah.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard her supplication and said: “You have asked Allah for a fixed term, a few numbered days, and apportioned sustenance. None of these things can come to you before their appointed time, nor can they be delayed beyond their fixed time. If you had supplicated to Allah to protect you from the punishment of Hell and the punishment of the grave, that would have been better and more virtuous.” The narrator says that once it was mentioned before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that monkeys are the transformed form of humans. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah never left any progeny for the people whose forms He transformed; whereas monkeys and pigs have existed from before.” The narrator says that once it was mentioned before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that monkeys are the transformed form of humans. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) began reciting Surah An-Nisa and continued to recite it skillfully. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wishes to recite the Qur'an as firmly as it was revealed, let him recite it like Ibn Umm 'Abd." Then he sat and began to supplicate, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask, you will be given." He supplicated: «اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ إِيمَانًا لَا يَرْتَدُّ وَنَعِيمًا لَا يَنْفَدُ وَمُرَافَقَةَ نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي أَعْلَى جَنَّةِ الْخُلْدِ» "O Allah! I ask You for such blessings that never end, for such coolness of the eyes that never ceases, and I ask for the companionship of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the eternal Paradise." Sayyiduna 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to give him glad tidings, but found that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) had preceded him, upon which Sayyiduna 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you have done this, then indeed you are always foremost in good deeds.
