Abdullah bin Utbah says that once some people came to Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked this question (that if a person marries a woman, no dowry is fixed, and before consummation he dies, what is the ruling?). Those people kept coming to Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) for about a month, insisting that he must give an answer to this issue. He said: I will state before you the conclusion I have reached by exercising my own judgment; if my answer is correct, it will be by Allah’s guidance, and if it is wrong, it will be from myself; Allah and His Messenger are free from it. The decision is that this woman will be given the dowry similar to that of women like her, she will also inherit, and she will have to observe the waiting period (‘iddah). Upon hearing this decision of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), a group from the tribe of Ashja’ stood up, among whom were Sayyiduna Jarrah and Sayyiduna Abu Sinan (may Allah be pleased with them both), and said: We bear witness that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the same decision regarding one of our women whose name was Barwa’ bint Washiq. I saw that it was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him. I said: "O Abu Abdur Rahman! You have come to visit at this time?" It was midday (and it was very hot). Then he began to narrate to me the ahadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I began to narrate to him. During this, he narrated this hadith: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'A time of tribulation is soon to come. In that time, the one who is asleep will be better than the one lying down, the one lying down will be better than the one sitting, the one sitting will be better than the one standing, the one standing will be better than the one walking, the one walking will be better than the one riding, and the one riding will be better than the one running. All those killed in that time will go to Hell.'"
I asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! When will that be?" He said: "Those will be the days of Harj." I asked: "What is meant by the days of Harj?" He said: "When a person will not feel safe with his companion." I asked: "If I reach that time, what do you command me to do?" He said: "Restrain yourself and your hand, and stay inside your house."
