Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Umrah only four times: once from Hudaybiyyah, once in the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah in the following year as 'Umrat al-Qada', once from Ji'irrana, and the fourth time on the occasion of his Hajj.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty does not look with mercy at those who let their trousers hang below the ankles."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that there was a dispute between two men. One of them was required to take an oath, so he swore: "By Allah, besides whom there is no deity, this person has no right over me." Meanwhile, Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) descended and said: "Order him to give the other his due; the right belongs to him, and he (the one who swore) is lying. The expiation for his false oath is that he bears witness to the oneness of Allah and acknowledges His recognition."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew four lines on the ground and said: "Do you know what these lines are?" The people replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most virtuous women among the women of Paradise are four: (1) Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her), (2) Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), (3) Maryam bint Imran (peace be upon them both), (4) Asiyah bint Muzahim (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the wife of Pharaoh."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were sitting, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also came and said, "Shall I not tell you who among the people holds the best rank and status?" The people said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!" He said, "The person who holds the reins of his horse and sets out in the path of Allah until he dies or is martyred." Then he said, "Shall I tell you about the person who comes next after him?" The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!" He said, "The man who lives alone in a mountain pass, performs prayer, gives zakat, and keeps away from evil people. Shall I not tell you about the person who holds the worst rank?" The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!" He said, "The person who begs from someone in the name of Allah and receives nothing."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that his maternal aunt, Sayyidah Umm Hufaid (may Allah be pleased with her), presented clarified butter, lizard, and cheese as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate some of the clarified butter and cheese, but left the lizard due to dislike. However, others ate it from the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) dining mat. If eating it had been forbidden, it would never have been eaten at the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) dining mat.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a ring made and wore it, then said, "My whole day today has been occupied with this; at one moment I would look at it, and at another moment I would look at you." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw it away.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “May Allah curse the Jews, for fat was made unlawful for them, but they melted it and turned it into oil, then sold it and began to consume its price. Whenever Allah forbids the consumption of something, He also forbids its price.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “(Allah Almighty has declared Makkah as a sanctuary) Its grass should not be cut, its trees should not be cut, its game should not be chased, and its lost property should not be picked up except by one who will announce it and deliver it to its owner.” Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Please make an exception for the grass called Izkhir. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made an exception for it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that there was an occasion when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not enforce the punishment for drinking alcohol. It happened in such a way that a man became intoxicated after drinking alcohol and was staggering here and there on the road. A person met him and caught him, intending to take him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When they reached near the house of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), the man freed his hand and ran away, entering the house of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and clinging to him from behind. People mentioned this incident to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed and said, "Did he do that?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not issue any command regarding him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the command for changing the Qiblah was revealed, the people said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What will happen to our companions who used to pray facing Bayt al-Maqdis and passed away in that state? Upon this, the following verse was revealed: «﴿وَمَا كَانَ اللّٰهُ لِيُضِيعَ إِيمَانَكُمْ﴾ [البقرة : 143]» "Allah is not one to waste your prayers."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) requested Jibreel (peace be upon him) to show himself in his original form. He said, "Pray to your Lord." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed, and at that very moment, a cloud rose from the east which gradually began to ascend and spread. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this, he fell unconscious and collapsed. Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), lifted him up, and wiped the saliva that was coming out from both sides of his mouth.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once some people of the Jat tribe, who had become idol worshippers, were brought to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah honor his face). He had them burned. When Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) found out, he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Whoever changes his religion, kill him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) once gave a verdict by accepting the testimony of one witness along with an oath from the claimant. The narrator asked Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) whether this ruling also applies in cases of divorce and emancipation? He replied: No, it is only in matters of buying and selling.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) once gave a verdict based on one witness and an oath from the claimant.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hajj is obligatory upon every Muslim who has the means. If I had said 'every year,' then performing Hajj every year would have become obligatory."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once some camels came to Madinah Munawwarah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bought one of those camels, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gained a few ounces of silver as profit from it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed that profit among the widowed women of Banu Abdul Muttalib and said, "I do not buy anything for which I do not have the price with me."

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that during the Prophetic era, a man came and accepted Islam, and after some time his wife also accepted Islam. The man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I had accepted Islam (but had kept it hidden for some reason), and my wife knew about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) declared her to be his wife and returned her to her first husband before the second husband.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever intends to perform Hajj should fulfill this intention quickly, because sometimes the mount is lost, sometimes a person falls ill, and sometimes a need arises as an obstacle."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Refrain from attributing any statement to me except that of which you are certain, for whoever attributes a false statement to me should prepare his abode in Hell, and whoever speaks about the Noble Qur'an without knowledge should also prepare his abode in Hell."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed masah (wiping) over the leather socks. But those people who think that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed masah before or after the revelation of Surah Al-Ma'idah, now ask them, by Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform masah over the leather socks after the revelation of Surah Al-Ma'idah, and even in the wilderness, I prefer to wipe over the back of a camel rather than perform masah over the leather socks. Benefit: This is the personal opinion of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), otherwise, from the statements of the majority of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), it is known that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed masah over the leather socks after the revelation of Surah Al-Ma'idah.

Ibn Abi Mulaykah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair (may Allah have mercy on him): O Urwah! Ask your mother, did your father not come with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when he had entered into Ihram?

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that in previous times, the jinn used to listen to heavenly news; they would hear one thing and add ten things of their own to it and convey it to the soothsayers. (The one thing which they had actually heard would prove true, and what they added from themselves would prove false.) And before this, stars were not thrown at them, but when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent, whenever any of the jinn reached their place, a shower of shooting stars would begin upon them and they would be burned. They complained about this to Iblis. He said: The reason for this is nothing except that something new has happened. So he sent out his armies, and some of them passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who was praying between the mountains of Nakhlah. They came to Iblis and informed him of this news. He said: This is the real reason that has arisen on the earth.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man brought a waterskin of wine as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to meet him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What is this?" He replied that it was a waterskin of wine which he had brought as a gift for him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not know that Allah has declared wine to be unlawful?" He said: No. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has made wine unlawful." Upon hearing this, the man turned to his servant and whispered to him to take it and sell it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What did you say to him?" He replied: I ordered him to go and sell it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The One who has forbidden its drinking has also forbidden its buying and selling." Thus, on his order, the wine was poured out in the valley of Batha, and nothing of it remained.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had cupping done and gave the cupper his wage. If this wage had been unlawful, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would never have given it. And whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had cupping done, he would have it done on the veins on both sides of the neck. A slave from Banu Bayadah used to cup the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he would take one and a half mudd of wheat daily as his wage. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to his masters about this, so they made it one mudd.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) married (Sayyidah Maymunah, may Allah be pleased with her) while he was in the state of Ihram.

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was helped by the east wind (the wind that comes from the direction of the door of the Ka'bah), and the people of 'Ad were destroyed by the west wind."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded to prostrate on seven bones, and was forbidden from gathering up clothes and hair during prayer.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the women who do unlawful acts in the graveyards, and also those who build mosques over graves and illuminate them.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray thirteen units of prayer at night (eight of Tahajjud, three of Witr, and two Sunnah of Fajr).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man from Banu Salim was driving his goats and passed by some of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). He greeted them with salam. They said, "He only greeted us to save his life." Saying this, they advanced towards him and killed him, and took his goats and presented them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Upon this, the following verse was revealed: « ﴿وَلَا تَقُولُوا لِمَنْ أَلْقَى إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامَ لَسْتَ مُؤْمِنًا تَبْتَغُونَ عَرَضَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا . . . . .﴾ [النساء : 94]» "And do not say to the one who greets you with peace, 'You are not a believer,' seeking the goods of worldly life . . . . ."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the verse «﴿كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ . . . . .﴾ [آل عمران : 110]» "You are the best nation brought forth for mankind..." refers to those people who migrated to Madinah Munawwarah with the Prophet (peace be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a Jew passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was sitting, and said, "O Abul Qasim! What do you say about the day when Allah will lift the heavens on this finger of His," and he pointed to his index finger, "the earth on this finger, the water on this finger, the mountains on this finger, and all creatures on this finger," and each time he kept pointing to his fingers? Upon this, the following verse was revealed: «﴿وَمَا قَدَرُوا اللّٰهَ حَقَّ قَدْرِهِ﴾ [الزمر : 67]» "They did not appraise Allah with true appraisal as is His due."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that one day when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) woke up in the morning, it was found that the army had no water. So a man came and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! The army has no water. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked him, "Do you have a little water?" He said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Bring it to me." After a short while, he brought a vessel in which there was very little water. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) placed his fingers on the mouth of the vessel and spread them. Immediately, springs began to gush forth from the fingers of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to announce among the people: "Come and take the blessed water."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the time of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) passing drew near, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Bring me writing materials so that I may write for you a document after which you will never go astray.” At that time, there were many people in the house, among whom was Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him). He said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is overcome by severe pain, and you have the Qur’an with you, and the Book of Allah is sufficient for us. At this, there arose a difference of opinion among the people; some were of the opinion that writing materials should be presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he could dictate something to them, and some agreed with the opinion of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When the noise and disagreement increased, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Get up from me.” Upon this, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say: Alas! Because of the people’s disagreement and noise, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was prevented from writing that document.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as long as he remained in Makkah, used to pray facing Bayt al-Maqdis, and the Ka'bah was in front of him. After the migration, for sixteen months, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to pray facing Bayt al-Maqdis, and later he was turned towards the Ka'bah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in his upper chamber when Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived and, after offering greetings, asked, "May Umar come inside?"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give the shares of inheritance to those who are entitled to them. After all the shares have been distributed, whatever wealth remains should be given to the closest male relative of the deceased (in the terminology of the science of inheritance, this is called 'Asabah')."
