Musnad of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 762
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، وَشُعْبَةُ ، وَإِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ هُبَيْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُوقِظُ أَهْلَهُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wake up his family to spend the night in worship during the last ten days of Ramadan.
Hadith 763
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أُعْطِيتُ مَا لَمْ يُعْطَ أَحَدٌ مِنَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ " ، فَقُلْنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا هُوَ ؟ قَالَ : " نُصِرْتُ بِالرُّعْبِ ، وَأُعْطِيتُ مَفَاتِيحَ الْأَرْضِ ، وَسُمِّيتُ أَحْمَدَ ، وَجُعِلَ التُّرَابُ لِي طَهُورًا ، وَجُعِلَتْ أُمَّتِي خَيْرَ الْأُمَمِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been given some things which were not given to any prophet before me." I asked: O Messenger of Allah! What are those things? He said: "I have been helped through awe, the treasures of the earth have been given to me, my name has been kept Ahmad, soil has been made purifying for me like water, and my Ummah has been given the title of the best Ummah."
Hadith 764
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أخبرنا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُوتِرُ عِنْدَ الْأَذَانِ ، وَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْ الْفَجْرِ عِنْدَ الْإِقَامَةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform Witr near the time of the Fajr adhan, and would offer the Sunnah of Fajr near the time of the iqamah.
Hadith 765
(حديث مرفوع) حدثنا أَبُو النَّضْرِ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَشْجَعِيُّ ، عَنْ سُفيان ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُجَيٍّ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : ذَكَرْنَا الدَّجَّالَ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ نَائِمٌ ، فَاسْتَيْقَظَ مُحْمَرًّا لَوْنُهُ ، فَقَالَ : " غَيْرُ ذَلِكَ أَخْوَفُ لِي عَلَيْكُمْ " ، ذَكَرَ كَلِمَةً .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sleeping and we were sitting nearby discussing the Dajjal. Suddenly, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up, and the color of his blessed face had turned red. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is something I fear for you more than the Dajjal."
Hadith 766
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : أُهْدِيَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَغْلٌ ، أَوْ بَغْلَةٌ ، فَقُلْتُ : مَا هَذَا ؟ قَالَ : " بَغْلٌ ، أَوْ بَغْلَةٌ " ، قُلْتُ : وَمِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ هُوَ ؟ قَالَ : " يُحْمَلُ الْحِمَارُ عَلَى الْفَرَسِ ، فَيَخْرُجُ بَيْنَهُمَا هَذَا " ، قُلْتُ : أَفَلَا نَحْمِلُ فُلَانًا عَلَى فُلَانَةَ ؟ قَالَ : " لَا ، إِنَّمَا يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a mule was presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a gift. I asked, "What is this?" He replied, "It is a mule. Is it male or female?" I asked, "From which lineage does it come?" He said, "A donkey is made to mount a mare, and the result is this mule." I said, "Then should I not also make such-and-such donkey mount such-and-such mare?" He said, "No, this is done by those who are ignorant."
Hadith 767
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ المُبَارَكٍ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ إِذَا اسْتَأْذَنْتُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " إِنْ كَانَ فِي صَلَاةٍ سَبَّحَ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ أَذِنَ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I used to present myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing and performing prayer at that time, he would say "Subhan Allah," and if he was not performing prayer at that time, he would grant permission as it was (and there would be no need to say "Subhan Allah").
Hadith 768
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي رَافِعٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتَى الْمَنْحَرَ بِمِنًى ، فَقَالَ : " هَذَا الْمَنْحَرُ ، وَمِنًى كُلُّهَا مَنْحَرٌ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came to the place of sacrifice in Mina and said: "This is the place of sacrifice, and all of Mina is a place of sacrifice."
Hadith 769
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ هَانِئِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا وُلِدَ الْحَسَنُ سميته حربا ، فجاء رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ " أَرُونِي ابْنِي ، مَا سَمَّيْتُمُوهُ ؟ " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : حَرْبًا ، قَالَ : " بَلْ هُوَ حَسَنٌ " ، فَلَمَّا وُلِدَ الْحُسَيْنُ سَمَّيْتُهُ حَرْبًا ، فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَرُونِي ابْنِي ، مَا سَمَّيْتُمُوهُ ؟ " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : حَرْبًا ، قَالَ : " بَلْ هُوَ حُسَيْنٌ " ، فَلَمَّا وُلِدَ الثَّالِثُ سَمَّيْتُهُ حَرْبًا ، فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَرُونِي ابْنِي ، مَا سَمَّيْتُمُوهُ ؟ " ، قُلْتُ : حَرْبًا ، قَالَ : " بَلْ هُوَ مُحَسِّنٌ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " سَمَّيْتُهُمْ بِأَسْمَاءِ وَلَدِ هَارُونَ : شَبَّرُ ، وَشَبِيرُ ، وَمُشَبِّرٌ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Hasan was born, I named him Harb. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard about the birth of the child and came and said: "Show me my son. What have you named him?" I replied: Harb. He said: "No, his name is Hasan." Then when Husayn was born, I named him Harb. On this occasion too, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "Show me my son. What have you named him?" I again replied: Harb. He said: "No, his name is Husayn." The same happened at the birth of the third son, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed his name to "Muhsin." Then he said: "I have named these children after the children of Hazrat Harun (peace be upon him), whose names were Shabbar, Shabbir, and Mushbir."
Hadith 770
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ هَانِئِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ، وَهُبَيْرَةَ بْنِ يَرِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ مَكَّةَ اتَّبَعَتْنَا ابْنَةُ حَمْزَةَ تُنَادِي : يَا عَمِّ ، يَا عَمِّ ، قَالَ : فَتَنَاوَلْتُهَا بِيَدِهَا ، فَدَفَعْتُهَا إِلَى فَاطِمَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، فَقُلْتُ : دُونَكِ ابْنَةَ عَمِّكِ ، قَالَ : فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ اخْتَصَمْنَا فِيهَا أَنَا وَجَعْفَرٌ وَزَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ ، فقال جعفر : ابنة عمي وخالتها عندي ، يعني : أسماء بنت عميس ، وَقَالَ زَيْدٌ : ابْنَةُ أَخِي ، وَقُلْتُ : أَنَا أَخَذْتُهَا وَهِيَ ابْنَةُ عَمِّي ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا جَعْفَرُ ، فَأَشْبَهْتَ خَلْقِي وَخُلُقِي ، وَأَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا عَلِيُّ ، فَمِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْكَ ، وَأَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا زَيْدُ ، فَأَخُونَا وَمَوْلَانَا ، وَالْجَارِيَةُ عِنْدَ خَالَتِهَا ، فَإِنَّ الْخَالَةَ وَالِدَةٌ " ، قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَلَا تَزَوَّجُهَا ؟ قَالَ : " إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when we were about to leave Makkah, the daughter of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) started following us, calling out, “Uncle! Uncle!” I took her by the hand and entrusted her to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), and said to her, “Take care of your cousin.” When we reached Madinah, there was a dispute between me, Sayyiduna Ja’far, and Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with them) regarding the guardianship of the girl. Sayyiduna Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with him) argued that she was his uncle’s daughter, and her maternal aunt, Sayyidah Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her), was married to him, so her guardianship was his right. Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said that she was his niece. I claimed that I had brought her and she was my uncle’s daughter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) decided the matter, saying: “Ja’far! You resemble me in appearance and character. Ali! You are from me and I am from you. And Zayd! You are our brother and our freed slave. The girl will stay with her maternal aunt, for the maternal aunt is like the mother in status.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Why don’t you marry her?” He replied, “Because she is my foster niece.”
Hadith 771
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا يَسْتَغْفِرُ لِأَبَوَيْهِ وَهُمَا مُشْرِكَانِ ، فَقُلْتُ : أَيَسْتَغْفِرُ الرَّجُلُ لِأَبَوَيْهِ وَهُمَا مُشْرِكَانِ ؟ فَقَالَ : أَوَلَمْ يَسْتَغْفِرْ إِبْرَاهِيمُ لِأَبِيهِ ؟ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَنَزَلَتْ : " مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ تَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُ سورة التوبة آية 113 - 114 " ، قَالَ : " لَمَّا مَاتَ " ، فَلَا أَدْرِي قَالَهُ سُفْيَانُ ، أَوْ قَالَهُ إِسْرَائِيلُ ، أَوْ هُوَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ : " لَمَّا مَاتَ " ؟ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard a man supplicating for forgiveness for his polytheist parents, so I said, "Can a person supplicate for forgiveness for his polytheist parents?" He replied, "Did not Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) supplicate for forgiveness for his father?" I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so this verse was revealed: «﴿مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ﴾ [التوبة : 113]» "It is not appropriate for the Prophet and the believers to seek forgiveness for the polytheists."
Hadith 772
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَمِّي إِيَاسُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، يَقُولُ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُسَبِّحُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ، وَعَائِشَةُ مُعْتَرِضَةٌ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْقِبْلَةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that sometimes the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would be performing prayer at night, and Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) would be lying between him and the Qiblah.
Hadith 773
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، وَأَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا فِطْرٌ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ أَبِي بَزَّةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ ، قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَوْ لَمْ يَبْقَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا يَوْمٌ ، لَبَعَثَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ رَجُلًا مِنَّا ، يَمْلَؤُهَا عَدْلًا كَمَا مُلِئَتْ جَوْرًا " ، قَالَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ : " رَجُلًا مِنّي " ، قَالَ : وَسَمِعْتُهُ مَرَّةً يَذْكُرُهُ ، عَنْ حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if only one day remains for the end of the world, Allah Almighty will surely send a man from among us who will fill the earth with justice and fairness just as it had previously been filled with oppression and tyranny." (The reference is to Sayyiduna Imam Mahdi, may Allah be pleased with him, about whom a separate book by this humble author titled "The Concept of Imam Mahdi in Islam" is available in the market.)
Hadith 774
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، حَدَّثَنِي إِسْرَائِيلُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ هَانِئٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " الْحَسَنُ أَشْبَهُ النَّاسِ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا بَيْنَ الصَّدْرِ إِلَى الرَّأْسِ ، وَالْحُسَيْنُ أَشْبَهُ النَّاسِ بِالنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا كَانَ أَسْفَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) resembled the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the chest up to the head, and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) resembled the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the lower part.
Hadith 775
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ ، قَالَ : يُونُسُ بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ أَخْبَرَنِي ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ أَذْنَبَ فِي الدُّنْيَا ذَنْبًا ، فَعُوقِبَ بِهِ ، فَاللَّهُ أَعْدَلُ مِنْ أَنْ يُثَنِّيَ عُقُوبَتَهُ عَلَى عَبْدِهِ ، وَمَنْ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْبًا فِي الدُّنْيَا ، فَسَتَرَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ ، وَعَفَا عَنْهُ ، فَاللَّهُ أَكْرَمُ مِنْ أَنْ يَعُودَ فِي شَيْءٍ قَدْ عَفَا عَنْهُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever commits a sin in this world and receives its punishment, then Allah is too just to punish His servant again. And whoever commits a sin in this world and Allah conceals it and forgives him, then Allah is too generous to reopen the matter of that which He has already forgiven."
Hadith 776
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَلَمَةَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ كُهَيْلٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ حَبَّةَ الْعُرَنِيِّ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ضَحِكَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ لَمْ أَرَهُ ضَحِكَ ضَحِكًا أَكْثَرَ مِنْهُ ، حَتَّى بَدَتْ نَوَاجِذُهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " ذَكَرْتُ قَوْلَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، ظَهَرَ عَلَيْنَا أَبُو طَالِبٍ ، وَأَنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَنَحْنُ نُصَلِّي بِبَطْنِ نَخْلَةَ ، فَقَالَ : مَاذَا تَصْنَعَانِ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي ؟ فَدَعَاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ ، فَقَالَ : مَا بِالَّذِي تَصْنَعَانِ بَأْسٌ ، أَوْ بِالَّذِي تَقُولَانِ بَأْسٌ ، وَلَكِنْ وَاللَّهِ لَا تَعْلُوَنِي اسْتِي أَبَدًا ، وَضَحِكَ تَعَجُّبًا لِقَوْلِ أَبِيهِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ لَا أَعْتَرِفُ أَنَّ عَبْدًا لَكَ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ عَبَدَكَ قَبْلِي غَيْرَ نَبِيِّكَ ، ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ لَقَدْ صَلَّيْتُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ النَّاسُ سَبْعًا " .
Habbah Arni says that I once saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) laughing on the pulpit in such a way that I had never seen him laugh so much before, to the extent that even his back teeth became visible. Then he said that I remembered something my father Abu Talib once said. One time, I was praying with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Batn Nakhlah when Abu Talib came and said, "Nephew! What are you both doing?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) presented Islam to him. He said, "There is nothing wrong with what you both are doing, but by Allah! I will not be able to raise my hips (in prayer)." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) laughed in amazement at his father's words and said, "O Allah! I do not take pride in the fact that, besides Your Prophet, any servant of Yours in this Ummah worshipped You before me." Repeating this statement three times, he said, "I performed prayer seven years before the people started praying."
Hadith 777
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : وَجَدْتُ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ فِي كِتَابِ أَبِي ، وَأَكْثَرُ عِلْمِي إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنِّي سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْهُ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ لَهِيعَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ هُبَيْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زُرَيْرٍ الْغَافِقِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، قَالَ : صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا فَانْصَرَفَ ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ وَرَأْسُهُ يَقْطُرُ مَاءً ، فَصَلَّى بِنَا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " إِنِّي صَلَّيْتُ بِكُمْ آنِفًا وَأَنَا جُنُبٌ ، فَمَنْ أَصَابَهُ مِثْلُ الَّذِي أَصَابَنِي ، أَوْ وَجَدَ رِزًّا فِي بَطْنِهِ ، فَلْيَصْنَعْ مِثْلَ مَا صَنَعْتُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were praying with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when suddenly the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left the prayer and went home, and we remained standing as we were. After a short while, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, and drops of water were dripping from his head. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer again from the beginning, and after finishing, he said: "When I stood for prayer, I remembered that I had become impure by choice, so if any of you feels some disturbance in his stomach, or experiences a condition like mine, he should do as I did."
Hadith 778
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنِ الْمِنْهَالِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، قَالَ : كَانَ أَبِي يَسْمُرُ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ ، وَكَانَ عَلِيٌّ يَلْبَسُ ثِيَابَ الصَّيْفِ فِي الشِّتَاءِ ، وَثِيَابَ الشِّتَاءِ فِي الصَّيْفِ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : لَوْ سَأَلْتَهُ ؟ فَسَأَلَهُ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ وَأَنَا أَرْمَدُ الْعَيْنِ يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي أَرْمَدُ الْعَيْنِ ، قَالَ : فَتَفَلَ فِي عَيْنِي ، وَقَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ أَذْهِبْ عَنْهُ الْحَرَّ وَالْبَرْدَ " ، فَمَا وَجَدْتُ حَرًّا وَلَا بَرْدًا مُنْذُ يَوْمِئِذٍ ، وَقَالَ : " لَأُعْطِيَنَّ الرَّايَةَ رَجُلًا يُحِبُّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ، وَيُحِبُّهُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، لَيْسَ بِفَرَّارٍ " ، فَتَشَرَّفَ لَهَا أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَعْطَانِيهَا .
Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says that my father used to converse with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at night about various matters. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had a strange habit: he would wear warm clothes in the winter and cool clothes in the summer. Someone said to my father, "If you ask Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about this, perhaps he will answer you?" So, when my father asked, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Once, on the day of the Battle of Khaybar, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a messenger to me. I was suffering from an eye disease, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah! I have an eye ailment." Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his saliva in my eyes and prayed: «اَللّٰهُمَّ أَذْهِبْ عَنْهُ الْحَرَّ وَالْبَرْدَ» "O Allah! Remove from him the heat and the cold." From that day until today, I have never felt heat or cold. On that occasion, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said, "I will give this flag to the person who loves Allah and His Messenger, and who is beloved in the sight of Allah and His Messenger, and he will not flee." The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) began to present themselves for this purpose, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted that flag to me.
Hadith 779
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، قَالَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ هَانِئِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَجَاءَ عَمَّارٌ ، فَاسْتَأْذَنَ ، فَقَالَ : " ائْذَنُوا لَهُ ، مَرْحَبًا بِالطَّيِّبِ الْمُطَيَّبِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was present in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and began to seek permission to enter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Grant him permission, welcome to the person who is pure and possesses purity."
Hadith 780
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ ، وَغَيْرِهِ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُخَيْمِرَةَ ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ، قَالَ : سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ، فَقَالَتْ : سَلْ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَسَأَلْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ : " ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ ، يَعْنِي لِلْمُسَافِرِ ، وَيَوْمٌ وَلَيْلَةٌ لِلْمُقِيمِ " .
Shuraih bin Hani (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) a question regarding wiping over the socks, so she said, "You should ask this question to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)." So I asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said, "A traveler is permitted to wipe over the socks for three days and three nights, and a resident for one day and one night."
Hadith 781
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ عَبْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي لُبَابَةَ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُخَيْمِرَةَ ، عَنْ شُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ، قَالَ : أَمَرَنِي عَلِيٌّ أَنْ " أَمْسَحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ " .
Shurayh bin Hani (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered me to wipe over the leather socks (mash on the khuffs).
Hadith 782
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ مُخَارِقٍ ، عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ ، قَالَ : شَهِدْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ : وَاللَّهِ " مَا عِنْدَنَا كِتَابٌ نَقْرَؤُهُ عَلَيْكُمْ إِلَّا كِتَابَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى ، وَهَذِهِ الصَّحِيفَةَ ، مُعَلَّقَةً بِسَيْفِهِ ، أَخَذْتُهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فِيهَا فَرَائِضُ الصَّدَقَةِ " ، مُعَلَّقَةً بِسَيْفٍ لَهُ حِلْيَتُهُ حَدِيدٌ ، أَوْ قَالَ : بَكَرَاتُهُ حَدِيدٌ .
Tariq bin Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying on the pulpit: By Allah! We have no book that we read except the Noble Qur'an, or this scroll which is hanging from the sword. I obtained it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it contains the details of the shares of Zakat. The mentioned scroll used to hang from the sword of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), whose rings were made of iron.
Hadith 783
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : حدثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ الْهَاشِمِيُّ ، قَالَ : كَانَ أَبِي الْحَارِثُ عَلَى أَمْرٍ مِنْ أُمُرِ مَكَّةَ فِي زَمَنِ عُثْمَانَ ، فَأَقْبَلَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ إِلَى مَكَّةَ ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ : فَاسْتَقْبَلْتُ عُثْمَانَ بِالنُّزُلِ بِقُدَيْدٍ ، فَاصْطَادَ أَهْلُ الْمَاءِ حَجَلًا ، فَطَبَخْنَاهُ بِمَاءٍ وَمِلْحٍ ، فَجَعَلْنَاهُ عُرَاقًا لِلثَّرِيدِ ، فَقَدَّمْنَاهُ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ وَأَصْحَابِهِ ، فَأَمْسَكُوا ، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ : صَيْدٌ لَمْ أَصْطَدْهُ ، وَلَمْ نآمُرْ بِصَيْدِهِ ، اصْطَادَهُ قَوْمٌ حِلٌّ فَأَطْعَمُونَاهُ ، فَمَا بَأْسٌ ؟ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ مَنْ يَقُولُ فِي هَذَا ؟ فَقَالُوا : عَلِيٌّ ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَجَاءَ ، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ حِينَ جَاءَ وَهُوَ يَحُتُّ الْخَبَطَ عَنْ كَفَّيْهِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ : صَيْدٌ لَمْ نَصْطَدْهُ وَلَمْ نَأْمُرْ بِصَيْدِهِ ، اصْطَادَهُ قَوْمٌ حِلٌّ ، فَأَطْعَمُونَاهُ ، فَمَا بَأْسٌ ؟ قَالَ : فَغَضِبَ عَلِيٌّ ، وَقَالَ : أَنْشُدُ اللَّهَ رَجُلًا شَهِدَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ أُتِيَ بِقَائِمَةِ حِمَارِ وَحْشٍ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّا قَوْمٌ حُرُمٌ ، فَأَطْعِمُوهُ أَهْلَ الْحِلِّ " ، قَالَ : فَشَهِدَ اثْنَا عَشَرَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ أُشْهِدُ اللَّهَ رَجُلًا شَهِدَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ أُتِيَ بِبَيْضِ النَّعَامِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّا قَوْمٌ حُرُمٌ ، أَطْعِمُوهُ أَهْلَ الْحِلِّ " ، قَالَ : فَشَهِدَ دُونَهُمْ مِنَ الْعِدَّةِ مِنَ الِاثْنَيْ عَشَرَ ، قَالَ : فَثَنَى عُثْمَانُ وَرِكَهُ عَنِ الطَّعَامِ ، فَدَخَلَ رَحْلَهُ ، وَأَكَلَ ذَلِكَ الطَّعَامَ أَهْلُ الْمَاءِ .
Abdullah bin Al-Harith narrates that during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him), my father Harith held a position in Makkah Mukarramah. Once, Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Makkah Mukarramah, and—as Abdullah bin Al-Harith says—I welcomed him at the encampment of a place called Qudayd. The people of Ma’ caught a horse, we cooked it with water and salt, separated its meat from the bones, and prepared tharid from it. After that, we presented the food before Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions, but his companions did not reach out for it. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Neither did I hunt this animal, nor did I order it to be hunted. A non-Muhrim group hunted it and they are presenting it before us, so what is the harm in it? Who says it is unlawful?” People mentioned the name of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for him. Abdullah bin Al-Harith says: The scene is still vivid before my eyes that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was coming, dusting off his hands. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said the same to him: “Neither did we hunt it, nor did we order it to be hunted. A non-Muhrim group hunted it and presented it before us to eat, so what is the harm in it?” Hearing this, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) expressed some hesitation and said: “I make everyone who was present at that occasion with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) swear, when the leg of a wild donkey was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not say: ‘We are in the state of Ihram, feed this to the people of Hil (non-Muhrim)?’ Is it so or not?” At this, twelve companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and confirmed Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “When ostrich eggs were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I make all the companions present at that occasion swear, did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not say: ‘We are in the state of Ihram, feed this to the non-Muhrim people?’” At this, twelve other companions (may Allah be pleased with them) stood up. Seeing this, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) got up from the dining mat and went to his tent, and the people of Ma’ ate that food.
Hadith 784
(حديث مرفوع) حدثنا عبد الله ، حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ : أَنَّ أَبَاهُ وَلِيَ طَعَامَ عُثْمَانَ ، قَالَ : فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَجَلِ حَوَالَيْ الْجِفَانِ ، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَكْرَهُ هَذَا ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ وَهُوَ مُلَطِّخٌ يَدَيْهِ بِالْخَبَطِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّكَ لَكَثِيرُ الْخِلَافِ عَلَيْنَا ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ : أُذَكِّرُ اللَّهَ مَنْ شَهِدَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُتِيَ بِعَجُزِ حِمَارِ وَحْشٍ وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّا مُحْرِمُونَ ، فَأَطْعِمُوهُ أَهْلَ الْحِلِّ " ، فَقَامَ رِجَالٌ فَشَهِدُوا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : أُذَكِّرُ اللَّهَ رَجُلًا شَهِدَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُتِيَ بِخَمْسِ بِيضَاتٍ ، بَيْضِ نَعَامٍ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّا مُحْرِمُونَ ، فَأَطْعِمُوهُ أَهْلَ الْحِلِّ " ، فَقَامَ رِجَالٌ فَشَهِدُوا ، فَقَامَ عُثْمَانُ فَدَخَلَ فُسْطَاطَهُ ، وَتَرَكُوا الطَّعَامَ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْمَاءِ .
Abdullah bin Al-Harith narrates that his father Harith was responsible for the food of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Abdullah bin Al-Harith says that the scene is still vivid in my eyes: around the pots was placed horse meat. A man came and said that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) does not consider it good. Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for him. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came, dusting off his hands. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "You differ with us a lot." Hearing this, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I swear by every person who was present at that time in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when the haunch of a wild donkey was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'We are in the state of Ihram, feed this to the people of Hil.' Is this not so?" Upon this, some of the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and confirmed Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "When five ostrich eggs were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I ask those companions (may Allah be pleased with them) present at that time by oath, did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not say, 'We are in the state of Ihram, feed these to those who are not in Ihram'?" Upon this, some companions (may Allah be pleased with them) stood up. Seeing this, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) got up from the dining mat and went to his tent, and that food was eaten by the people of Ma’.
Hadith 785
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَيْرِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زُرَيْرٍ الْغَافِقِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : أُهْدِيَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَغْلَةٌ ، فَقُلْنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، لَوْ أَنَّا أَنْزَيْنَا الْحُمُرَ عَلَى خَيْلِنَا فَجَاءَتْنَا بِمِثْلِ هَذِهِ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّمَا يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a mule was presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a gift. We said, "O Messenger of Allah! If we mate such-and-such donkey with such-and-such mare and an animal like this is produced, what about that?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is done by those who are ignorant."
Hadith 786
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْوَتْرَ لَيْسَ بِحَتْمٍ ، وَلَكِنَّهُ سُنَّةٌ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوَتْرَ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that Witr does not have definitive proof from the Noble Qur’an like the obligatory prayers, but its obligation is established from the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah Almighty is Odd and loves the odd number.
Hadith 787
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنْ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ مِقْسَمٍ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ ، عَنْ مَوْلَاهُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ ، قَالَ : اعْتَمَرْتُ مَعَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فِي زَمَانِ عُمَرَ ، أَوْ زَمَانِ عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَنَزَلَ عَلَى أُخْتِهِ أُمِّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ عُمْرَتِهِ ، رَجَعَ ، فَسُكِبَ لَهُ غُسْلٌ فَاغْتَسَلَ ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ غُسْلِهِ ، دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ نَفَرٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ ، فَقَالُوا : يَا أَبَا حَسَنٍ ، جِئْنَاكَ نَسْأَلُكَ عَنْ أَمْرٍ نُحِبُّ أَنْ تُخْبِرَنَا عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : أَظُنُّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ يُحَدِّثُكُمْ أَنَّهُ كَانَ أَحْدَثَ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ قَالُوا : أَجَلْ ، عَنْ ذَلِكَ جِئْنَا نَسْأَلُكَ ، قَالَ : " أَحْدَثُ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قُثَمُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ " .
Abdullah bin Harith says that once during the caliphate of Umar or the caliphate of Uthman, I had the honor of performing Umrah with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). During this time, he stayed at the house of his sister, Sayyida Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her). When he finished the Umrah, he returned to her house. Water was arranged for his bath, and he performed ghusl. He had just finished bathing when a delegation from Iraq arrived. They said, "O Abu al-Hasan! We have come to you with a question. We wish that you tell us something about it." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I think that Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) has narrated to you this hadith that he was the last one to be with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." They said, "Exactly, we have come to ask you about this." He said, "The one who was the last with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was Qutham bin Abbas."
Hadith 788
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُتَيْبَةُ ، عَنْ بُرَيْدِ بْنِ أَصْرَمَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : مَاتَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الصُّفَّةِ ، وَتَرَكَ دِينَارَيْنِ ، أَوْ دِرْهَمَيْنِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كَيَّتَانِ ، صَلُّوا عَلَى صَاحِبِكُمْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that one of the people of Suffah passed away, and he left behind two dinars or two dirhams as inheritance. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These are two coals of Hell with which he will be branded. You should perform the funeral prayer of your companion yourselves."
Hadith 789
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى الثَّعْلَبِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " مَنْ كَذَبَ فِي الرُّؤْيَا مُتَعَمِّدًا ، كُلِّفَ عَقْدَ شَعِيرَةٍ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in a marfu’ form that whoever deliberately relates a false dream will be made responsible on the Day of Resurrection to tie a knot in a barley grain (he will be ordered to do so).
Hadith 790
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ لُوَيْنٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ رُوَيْبَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعَتْ أُذُنَايَ وَوَعَاهُ قَلْبِي ، منْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " النَّاسُ تَبَعٌ لِقُرَيْشٍ ، صَالِحُهُمْ تَبَعٌ لِصَالِحِهِمْ ، وَشِرَارُهُمْ تَبَعٌ لِشِرَارِهِمْ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that my ears heard this from the blessed tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and my heart and mind preserved it: "All people are followers of the Quraysh; the good are followers of the good, and the evil are followers of the evil."
Hadith 791
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي سَدُوسٍ ، يُقَالُ لَهُ : جُرَيُّ بْنُ كُلَيْبٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى عَنْ عَضْبَاءِ الْأُذُنِ وَالْقَرْنِ " ، قَالَ : فَسَأَلْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، فَقَالَ : النِّصْفُ فَمَا فَوْقَ ذَلِكَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade sacrificing an animal with a broken horn or a cut ear. The narrator says: I asked Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) about its meaning, so he said: The animal whose half or more of the ear is cut.
Hadith 792
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَيْسُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمِقْدَامِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَزْرَقِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا نَائِمٌ عَلَى الْمَنَامَةِ ، فَاسْتَسْقَى الْحَسَنُ أَوْ الْحُسَيْنُ ، قَالَ : فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى شَاةٍ لَنَا بَكِيءٍ ، فَحَلَبَهَا فَدَرَّتْ ، فَجَاءَهُ الْحَسَنُ ، فَنَحَّاهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، كَأَنَّهُ أَحَبُّهُمَا إِلَيْكَ ؟ قَالَ : " لَا ، وَلَكِنَّهُ اسْتَسْقَى قَبْلَهُ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " إِنِّي وَإِيَّاكِ وَهَذَيْنِ وَهَذَا الرَّاقِدَ ، فِي مَكَانٍ وَاحِدٍ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to my humble home while I was sleeping. In the meantime, Sayyiduna Hasan or Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) became thirsty. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to one of our goats which gave very little milk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) milked it, and a great amount of milk came out. Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated him to one side. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "O Messenger of Allah! Perhaps you love him more?" He replied, "That is not the case; in fact, he asked first." Then he said, "On the Day of Resurrection, I, you, these two, and this one who is sleeping will be in the same place."
Hadith 793
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ لُوَيْنٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا حُدَيْجٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " خَرَجْتُ حِينَ بَزَغَ الْقَمَرُ كَأَنَّهُ فِلْقُ جَفْنَةٍ ، فَقَالَ : اللَّيْلَةَ لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I left the house at a time when the moon had risen, and it seemed as if it was the crack of a large bowl," and he said: "Tonight is the Night of Qadr."
Hadith 794
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ زَاذَانَ ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " مَنْ تَرَكَ مَوْضِعَ شَعَرَةٍ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ لَمْ يُصِبْهَا الْمَاءُ ، فُعِلَ بِهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا مِنَ النَّارِ " ، قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : فَمِنْ ثَمَّ عَادَيْتُ رَأْسِي ، فَمِنْ ثَمَّ عَادَيْتُ رَأْسِي .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Whoever, while performing ghusl in a state of major impurity, leaves even an area equal to a single hair where water does not reach, Allah Almighty will deal with him in such and such a manner in Hell." From that very moment, I developed enmity with my hair.
Hadith 795
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ زَاذَانَ ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ شَرِبَ قَائِمًا ، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ النَّاسُ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَنْكَرُوهُ ، فَقَالَ : مَا تَنْظُرُونَ ؟ " إِنْ أَشْرَبْ قَائِمًا ، فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَشْرَبُ قَائِمًا ، وَإِنْ أَشْرَبْ قَاعِدًا ، فَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَشْرَبُ قَاعِدًا " .
Zadhan says that once Syedna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) drank water while standing, and people began to look at him with astonishment. He said: Why are you staring at me? If I have drunk water standing, it is because I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) do so, and if I have drunk sitting, I have seen him do that as well.
Hadith 796
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، وَحَسَنُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " ضَخْمَ الرَّأْسِ ، عَظِيمَ الْعَيْنَيْنِ ، هَدِبَ الْأَشْفَارِ ، قَالَ حَسَنٌ : الشِّفَارِ ، مُشْرَبَ الْعَيْنَيْنِ بِحُمْرَةٍ ، كَثَّ اللِّحْيَةِ ، أَزْهَرَ اللَّوْنِ ، شَثْنَ الْكَفَّيْنِ وَالْقَدَمَيْنِ ، إِذَا مَشَى كَأَنَّمَا يَمْشِي فِي صُعُدٍ ، قَالَ حَسَنٌ : تَكَفَّأَ ، وَإِذَا الْتَفَتَ الْتَفَتَ جَمِيعًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a large head, big eyes, long eyelashes, reddish streaks in his eyes, a thick beard, a radiant complexion, and full hands and feet. His manner of walking was such that it seemed as if he was descending from a slope. And when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards someone, he would turn completely towards them.
Hadith 797
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ عِيَاضٍ ، وَقَالَ لِي : هُوَ اسْمِي وَكُنْيَتِي ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ سُعَيْرٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْخِمْسِ ، حَدَّثَنَا فُرَاتُ بْنُ أَحْنَفَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَامَ خَطِيبًا فِي الرَّحَبَةِ ، فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ، ثُمّ قَالَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ ، ثُمَّ " دَعَا بِكُوزٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَتَمَضْمَضَ مِنْهُ ، وَتَمَسَّحَ ، وَشَرِبَ فَضْلَ كُوزِهِ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ الرَّجُلَ مِنْكُمْ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَشْرَبَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ، وَهَذَا وُضُوءُ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ ، وَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَلَ هَكَذَا " .
Rabi’ bin Hirash says that once Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood in the courtyard of Kufa to deliver a speech. He praised Allah and said whatever Allah willed. After that, he called for a vessel of water, rinsed his mouth from it, wiped some water over his limbs of ablution as a form of masah, and drank the remaining water while standing. He then said: I have come to know that some of you consider drinking water while standing to be disliked. This is the ablution of a person who is not without ablution, and I have seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) doing this.
Hadith 798
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْوَرَكَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ مُخَارِقٍ ، عَنْ طَارِقٍ ، قَالَ : خَطَبَنَا عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَقَالَ : " مَا عِنْدَنَا شَيْءٌ مِنَ الْوَحْيِ ، أَوْ قَالَ : كِتَابٌ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، إِلَّا مَا فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ ، وَهَذِهِ الصَّحِيفَةِ الْمَقْرُونَةِ بِسَيْفِي ، وَعَلَيْهِ سَيْفٌ حِلْيَتُهُ حَدِيدٌ ، وَفِيهَا فَرَائِضُ الصَّدَقَاتِ " .
Tariq bin Shihab says that I heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying on the pulpit: By Allah! We have no book or revelation that we read except the Noble Qur’an, or this scroll which is hanging from my sword. In it is detailed the shares of Zakat. The mentioned scroll used to hang from the sword of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), whose rings were made of iron.
Hadith 799
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، أخبرنا عَاصِمُ بْنُ بَهْدَلَةَ ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا قِيلَ لَهُ : إِنَّ قَاتِلَ الزُّبَيْرِ عَلَى الْبَابِ ، فَقَالَ : لِيَدْخُلْ قَاتِلُ ابْنِ صَفِيَّةَ النَّارَ ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " إِنَّ لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ حَوَارِيًّا ، وَإِنَّ الزُّبَيْرَ حَوَارِيِّي " .
Zirr bin Hubaish says that (Ibn Jurmuz sought permission to enter upon Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, asked, "Who is it?") The people informed him that Ibn Jurmuz wanted to come in. He said: Let him come in. The killer of Sayyiduna Zubair, may Allah be pleased with him, will enter Hell. I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "Every prophet has a special disciple, and my disciple is Zubair."
Hadith 800
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، وَإِسْحَاق بْنُ عِيسَى ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ ، عَنْ مَيْمُونِ بْنِ أَبِي شَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : وَهَبَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ غُلَامَيْنِ أَخَوَيْنِ ، فَبِعْتُ أَحَدَهُمَا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا فَعَلَ الْغُلَامَانِ ؟ " ، فَقُلْتُ : بِعْتُ أَحَدَهُمَا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " رُدَّهُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once gifted me two slaves, and they were brothers. I sold one of them. One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, "What happened to those slaves?" I replied that I had sold one of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Take him back."
Hadith 801
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، وَحَسَنُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ ، قَالَ عَفَّانُ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ابْنِ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كُفِّنَ فِي سَبْعَةِ أَثْوَابٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in seven garments.
