Musnad of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 1002
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي حَسَنُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، وَعَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ ، أن مجاهدا أخبرهما ، أن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى أخبره ، أن عليا رضي الله عنه أخبره ، أن النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمَرَهُ أَنْ " يَقُومَ عَلَى بُدْنِهِ ، وَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَقْسِمَ بُدْنَهُ كُلَّهَا لُحُومَهَا ، وَجُلُودَهَا ، وَجِلَالَهَا ، وَلَا يُعْطِيَ فِي جِزَارَتِهَا مِنْهَا شَيْئًا .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to be present with him at the time of sacrifice, and that I should distribute the skins and coverings of those camels, as well as distribute the meat, and he also ordered that nothing from them should be given to the butcher as wages.
Hadith 1003
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَنْبَأَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ ، وَقَالَ : " نَحْنُ نُعْطِيهِ مِنْ عِنْدِنَا الْأَجْرَ " .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 1004
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلَانَ ، حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حُنَيْنٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " عَنْ خَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ ، وَأَنْ أَقْرَأَ وَأَنَا رَاكِعٌ ، وَعَنِ الْقَسِّيِّ ، وَالْمُعَصْفَرِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from reciting the Noble Qur'an in the state of bowing (ruku'), wearing a gold ring, silk clothes, and clothes dyed with safflower.
Hadith 1005
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنِي شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّزَّالِ بْنِ سَبْرَةَ ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَمَّا صَلَّى الظُّهْرَ ، دَعَا بِكُوزٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ ، فَشَرِبَ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ ، ثُمّ قَالَ : إِنَّ رِجَالًا يَكْرَهُونَ هَذَا ، وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَلَ كَالَّذِي رَأَيْتُمُونِي فَعَلْتُ ، ثُمَّ تَمَسَّحَ بِفَضْلِهِ ، وَقَالَ : " هَذَا وُضُوءُ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْدِثْ " .
Nazzal bin Sabrah says that once after the Zuhr prayer, a jug of water was brought to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He was in the courtyard of the mosque. He drank that water while standing and said: Some people consider this disliked, but I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) doing it just as you have seen me doing it. Then he wiped with the remaining water and said: The person who is not without ablution, but already has ablution, this is the ablution of such a person.
Hadith 1006
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ ابْنِ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " مِفْتَاحُ الصَّلَاةِ الطُّهُورُ ، وَتَحْرِيمُهَا التَّكْبِيرُ ، وَتَحْلِيلُهَا التَّسْلِيمُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The key to prayer is purification, the thing that makes lawful things unlawful in prayer is the opening takbeer (takbeer tahrimah), and the thing that makes them lawful again is the salutation (salaam)."
Hadith 1007
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ أَبُو كِبْرَانَ الْمُرَادِيُّ ، سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ خَيْرٍ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ : أَلَا أُرِيكُمْ وُضُوءَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ ثُمَّ " تَوَضَّأَ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا " .
Abdu Khair (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I not show you how to perform ablution like the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Then he washed each part of his body three times.
Hadith 1008
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُسْهِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ سَلْعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ سَلْعٍ ، قَالَ : كَانَ عَبْدُ خَيْرٍ يَؤُمُّنَا فِي الْفَجْرِ ، فَقَالَ : صَلَّيْنَا يَوْمًا الْفَجْرَ خَلْفَ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ قَامَ وَقُمْنَا مَعَهُ ، فَجَاءَ يَمْشِي حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى الرَّحَبَةِ ، فَجَلَسَ وَأَسْنَدَ ظَهْرَهُ إِلَى الْحَائِطِ ، ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ : يَا قَنْبَرُ ، ائْتِنِي بِالرَّكْوَةِ وَالطَّسْتِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ : صُبَّ ، فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِ ، " فَغَسَلَ كَفَّهُ ثَلَاثًا ، وَأَدْخَلَ كَفَّهُ الْيُمْنَى فَمَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْشَقَ ثَلَاثًا ، ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ كَفَّيْهِ فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا ، ثُمَّ أَدْخَلَ كَفَّهُ الْيُمْنَى فَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَهُ الْأَيْمَنَ ثَلَاثًا ، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ ذِرَاعَهُ الْأَيْسَرَ ثَلَاثًا ، فَقَالَ : هَذَا وُضُوءُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
Abu Abdul Malik says that in the Fajr prayer, Abdu Khair (may Allah have mercy on him) used to lead us. One day, we had the opportunity to offer the Fajr prayer behind Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). After completing the prayer and saying salam, when he stood up, we also stood up, until he walked into the courtyard of the mosque and sat down, leaning against the wall. Then he raised his head and said to his servant: Qanbar! Bring a bucket and a basin. Then he said: Pour water. He started pouring water, so first he (Ali) washed his palm three times, then put his right hand into the vessel and took out water, rinsed his mouth, and put water into his nose three times. Then he put both hands in, took out water, and washed his face three times. Then he put his right hand in, took out water, and washed his right hand three times, then washed his left hand three times, and said: This is the ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 1009
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ : كُنْتُ رَجُلًا مَذَّاءً ، وَكُنْتُ أَسْتَحِي أَنْ أَسْأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِمَكَانِ ابْنَتِهِ ، فَأَمَرْتُ الْمِقْدَادَ فَسَأَلَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " يَغْسِلُ ذَكَرَهُ وَأُنْثَيَيْهِ وَيَتَوَضَّأُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to have a lot of madhi (pre-seminal fluid). Since the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in my marriage, I felt shy to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue myself. So I said to Sayyiduna Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue. So he asked about this issue, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Such a person should wash his private part and perform wudu."
Hadith 1010
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ مُنْذِرٍ أَبِي يَعْلَى ، عَنْ ابْنِ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَمَرَ الْمِقْدَادَ فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ الْمَذْيِ ، فَقَالَ : " يَتَوَضَّأُ " .
Syedna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Syedna Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the ruling of madhi (pre-seminal fluid), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Such a person should perform ablution (wudu)."
Hadith 1011
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلِمَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَقْضِي الْحَاجَةَ ، فَيَأْكُلُ مَعَنَا اللَّحْمَ ، وَيَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَحْجِزُهُ أَوْ يَحْجُبُهُ ، إِلَّا الْجَنَابَةُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after relieving himself, would come out without performing ablution and begin reciting the Noble Qur'an. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would also eat meat with us, and nothing except major ritual impurity (janabah) would prevent him from reciting the Qur'an.
Hadith 1012
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُصَلِّي عَلَى كُلِّ أَثَرِ صَلَاةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ، إِلَّا الْفَجْرَ وَالْعَصْرَ " ، وَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ : فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray two units of prayer after every obligatory prayer except Fajr and Asr.
Hadith 1013
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، وَأَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنَّ بَاطِنَ الْقَدَمَيْنِ أَحَقُّ بِالْمَسْحِ مِنْ ظَاهِرِهِمَا ، حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَمْسَحُ ظَاهِرَهُمَا " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My opinion was that for wiping over the leather socks (khuffayn), the part of the socks that touches the ground was more appropriate to wipe than the part that is on top of the foot, until I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiping over the upper part, so I abandoned my opinion.
Hadith 1014
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي السَّوْدَاءِ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ تَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ ظُهُورَ قَدَمَيْهِ ، وَقَالَ : لَوْلَا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَغْسِلُ ظُهُورَ قَدَمَيْهِ " ، لَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ بُطُونَهُمَا أَحَقُّ بِالْغَسْلِ .
Abdu Khair, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I once saw Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, performing ablution. He washed the upper part of his foot and said: If I had not seen the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, washing the upper part of his foot, my opinion would have been that the lower part of the foot is more deserving of being washed (because it touches the ground more).
Hadith 1015
(حديث موقوف) (حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى ، قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ تَوَضَّأَ " فَمَسَحَ ظُهُورَهُمَا " .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain, in which it is mentioned that I saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) performing ablution, and he wiped over the upper part of his feet.
Hadith 1016
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ أَبُو كِبْرَانَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ ، يَعْنِي : هَذَا وُضُوءُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثُمَّ " تَوَضَّأَ ثَلَاثًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once, while performing ablution, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) washed each of his limbs three times.
Hadith 1017
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَدَّادٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : مَا سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُفَدِّي أَحَدًا بِأَبَوَيْهِ إِلَّا سَعْدَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ لَهُ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ : " ارْمِ سَعْدُ ، فِدَاكَ أَبِي وَأُمِّي " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I never heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) combine his parents for anyone—except for Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him). On the day of the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying to Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): “Sa’d! Shoot the arrow, may my parents be sacrificed for you.”
Hadith 1018
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : بَعَثَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَرِيَّةً ، وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ ، وَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يَسْمَعُوا لَهُ وَيُطِيعُوا ، قَالَ : فَأَغْضَبُوهُ فِي شَيْءٍ ، فَقَالَ : اجْمَعُوا لِي حَطَبًا ، فَجَمَعُوا حَطَبًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : أَوْقِدُوا نَارًا ، فَأَوْقَدُوا لَهُ نَارًا ، فَقَالَ : أَلَمْ يَأْمُرْكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ تَسْمَعُوا لِي وَتُطِيعُوا ؟ قَالُوا : بَلَى ، قَالَ : فَادْخُلُوهَا ، قَالَ : فَنَظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ ، فَقَالُوا : إِنَّمَا فَرَرْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ أَجْلِ النَّارِ ، فَكَانُوا كَذَلِكَ إِذْ سَكَنَ غَضَبُهُ ، وَطَفِئَتْ النَّارُ ، قَالَ : فَلَمَّا قَدِمُوا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " لَوْ دَخَلُوهَا مَا خَرَجُوا مِنْهَا ، إِنَّمَا الطَّاعَةُ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out an army and appointed an Ansari as their commander, and ordered the people to listen to him and obey him. When they set out, that Ansari became angry with them over something along the way. He said, "Gather firewood." Then he had a fire lit in the wood and said, "Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not order you to listen to me and obey me?" The people said, "Of course." He said, "Then enter this fire." The people began to look at one another and said, "It is from this very fire that we have fled and sought refuge with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." After a short while, his anger subsided and the fire was extinguished. When they returned, they told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the whole incident. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If you had entered it once, you would never have come out of it. Remember! Obedience is only in matters of goodness."
Hadith 1019
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ . ح وَعَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أخبرنا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ كُلَيْبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : نَهَانِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَنْ أَجْعَلَ الْخَاتَمَ فِي هَذِهِ أَوْ فِي هَذِهِ " ، قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ : لِأُصْبُعَيْهِ : السَّبَّابَةِ وَالْوُسْطَى .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade wearing a ring on the middle finger or the index finger.
Hadith 1020
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ ، عَنْ قَيْسٍ الْخَارِفِيِّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : " سَبَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَثَلَّثَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا ، أَوْ أَصَابَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ ، فَمَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ جَلَّ جَلَالُهُ " ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ : قَالَ أَبِي : قَوْلُهُ : " ثُمَّ خَبَطَتْنَا فِتْنَةٌ " ، أَرَادَ أَنْ يَتَوَاضَعَ بِذَلِكَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed first, then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) departed second, and Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) departed third. After that, trials surrounded us; Allah will forgive whomever He wills.
Hadith 1021
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، وَشُعْبَةَ ، وَحَمَّادِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ ، عَنْ حُجَيَّةَ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ الْبَقَرَةِ ؟ فَقَالَ : عَنْ سَبْعَةٍ ، قَالَ : الْقَرَنُ ؟ قَالَ : لَا يَضُرُّكَ ، قَالَ : الْعَرْجَاءُ ؟ قَالَ : إِذَا بَلَغَتْ الْمَنْسَكَ ، قَالَ : وَأَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَنْ نَسْتَشْرِفَ الْعَيْنَ وَالْأُذُنَ " .
A man asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about the sacrifice of a cow. He replied that one cow suffices for seven people. The man asked, "What if its horn is broken?" He replied, "There is no harm." He asked, "What if it is lame?" He replied, "If it can walk to the place of sacrifice by itself, then slaughter it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded us to "carefully examine the animal's eyes and ears."
Hadith 1022
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ حُجَيَّةَ بْنَ عَدِيٍّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْه ، وَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 1023
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ مُضَرِّبٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : مَا كَانَ فِينَا فَارِسٌ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ غَيْرُ الْمِقْدَادِ ، وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنَا وَمَا فِينَا إِلَّا نَائِمٌ ، إِلَّا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ يُصَلِّي ، وَيَبْكِي ، حَتَّى أَصْبَحَ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the occasion of the Battle of Badr, there was no horseman among us except Sayyiduna Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him), and among us every person would sleep except the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who kept praying under a tree and kept weeping until morning came.
Hadith 1024
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَصِينٍ ، عَنْ عُمَيْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " مَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ أَقَمْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَدًّا فَمَاتَ فَأَجِدُ فِي نَفْسِي إِلَّا الْخَمْرَ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَوْ مَاتَ لَوَدَيْتُهُ ، لِأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَسُنَّهُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that regarding anyone upon whom I have carried out any prescribed punishment, I do not feel any unease in my heart, except for (the punishment of) alcohol. If, after administering its punishment of eighty lashes, someone dies, then I pay his blood money, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not specify any fixed limit for it (whether forty lashes should be given or eighty).
Hadith 1025
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَيَّةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " يَتَوَضَّأُ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once washed each part of the body three times while performing ablution.
Hadith 1026
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ بْنِ قُدَامَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَصِينٍ الْأَسَدِيِّ . ح وَابْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ ، أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو حَصِينٍ الْأَسَدِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ رَجُلًا مَذَّاءً ، وَكَانَتْ تَحْتِي ابْنَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَمَرْتُ رَجُلًا فَسَأَلَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " تَوَضَّأْ وَاغْسِلْهُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to have a lot of madhi (pre-seminal fluid). Since the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was married to me, I felt shy to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue myself. So I told a man to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue. So he asked about it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Such a person should wash his private part and perform wudu."
Hadith 1027
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْوَرَكَانِيُّ ، أَنْبَأَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : صَلَّيْنَا الْغَدَاةَ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ فَجَلَسْنَا إِلَيْهِ فَدَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ ، فَأُتِيَ بِرَكْوَةٍ فِيهَا مَاءٌ وَطَسْتٍ ، قَالَ : " فَأَفْرَغَ الرَّكْوَةَ عَلَى يَدِهِ الْيُمْنَى ، فَغَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ، وَتَمَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا ، وَاسْتَنْثَرَ ثَلَاثًا ، بِكَفٍّ كَفٍّ ، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا ، وَذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا ثَلَاثًا ، ثُمَّ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ فِي الرَّكْوَةِ فَمَسَحَ بِهَا رَأْسَهُ بِكَفَّيْهِ جَمِيعًا مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً ، ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَيْه ِثلاثاً ثَلَاثًا ، ثُمّ قَالَ : هَذَا وُضُوءُ نَبِيِّكُمْ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاعْلَمُوهُ " .
Abdu Khair, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once we performed the Fajr prayer and went to sit with Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. He asked for water for ablution, so a bucket of water and a basin were brought. Then he poured water from the bucket onto his right hand and washed his palm three times. Then he put his right hand into the vessel, took out water, rinsed his mouth, and put water into his nose three times each. Then he washed his face three times, washed both arms three times each, then put his right hand in, took out water, and wiped his head once with both hands. Then he washed both feet three times each and said: "This is the ablution of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, understand it well."
Hadith 1028
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ ، عَنْ الرُّكَيْنِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنِ بْنِ قَبِيصَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ رَجُلًا مَذَّاءً ، فَسَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ : " إِذَا رَأَيْتَ الْمَذْيَ فَتَوَضَّأْ وَاغْسِلْ ذَكَرَكَ ، وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ فَضْخَ الْمَاءِ فَاغْتَسِلْ " ، فَذَكَرْتُهُ لِسُفْيَانَ ، فَقَالَ : قَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رُكَيْنٍ .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that madhy (pre-seminal fluid) would frequently discharge from my body. I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: "When you see madhy, wash your private part and perform ablution as you do for prayer, and if semen is discharged, then perform ghusl (full ritual bath)."
Hadith 1029
حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ ، وَابْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا الرُّكَيْنُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ عَمِيلَةَ الْفَزَارِيُّ ، فَذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ ، وَقَالَا : فَضْخَ الْمَاءِ ، وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ ، وَقَالَ : فَضْخَ أَيْضًا .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 1030
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ ، أخبرنا خَالِدٌ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، ثُمَّ خَيْرُهَا بَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُ اللَّهُ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُ أَحَبَّ " .
On one occasion, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I not tell you who is the best person in this Ummah after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He is Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and after Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), the best person in this Ummah is Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). After that, Allah creates love wherever He wills.
Hadith 1031
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَحْرٍ عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ الْبَصْرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ : " إِنَّ خَيْرَ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَبَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عُمَرُ ، وَأَحْدَثْنَا أَحْدَاثًا يَصْنَعُ اللَّهُ فِيهَا مَا شَاءَ " .
When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) finished with the people of Basra, he said: The best person in this Ummah after the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), after him was Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him), after that we have invented things in which Allah will do whatever He wills.
Hadith 1032
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ، أخبرنا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ ، عَنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : قَامَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَقَالَ : " خَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ ، وَإِنَّا قَدْ أَحْدَثْنَا بَعْدُ أَحْدَاثًا يَقْضِي اللَّهُ فِيهَا مَا شَاءَ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In this Ummah, after the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the best person was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), after him was Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him), after that we invented things in which Allah will do whatever He wills.
Hadith 1033
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ هَانِئِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ عَمَّارٌ يَسْتَأْذِنُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " ائْذَنُوا لَهُ ، مَرْحَبًا بِالطَّيِّبِ الْمُطَيَّبِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that (once I was present in the service of the Prophet ﷺ) when Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and began to seek permission to enter. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Grant him permission, welcome to the person who is pure and possesses purity."
Hadith 1034
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ ذِي حُدَّانَ ، حَدَّثَنِي مَنْ ، سَمِعَ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَقُولُ : سَمَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " الْحَرْبَ خَدْعَةً " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described war as "deception."
Hadith 1035
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ لِلْمِقْدَادِ : سَلْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَدْنُو مِنَ الْمَرْأَةِ فَيُمْذِي ، فَإِنِّي أَسْتَحْيِي مِنْهُ ، لِأَنَّ ابْنَتَهُ عِنْدِي ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يَغْسِلُ ذَكَرَهُ وَأُنْثَيَيْهِ وَيَتَوَضَّأُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I said to Sayyiduna Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue: If a man approaches his wife and madhiy (pre-seminal fluid) is discharged from him, what is the ruling? I felt shy to ask this question myself, because his daughter is married to me. So he asked this issue, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Such a person should wash his private part and perform wudu."
Hadith 1036
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنِ أَبِي الضُّحَى ، عَنْ شُتَيْرِ بْنِ شَكَلٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : شَغَلُونَا يَوْمَ الْأَحْزَابِ عَنْ صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ ، حَتَّى سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " شَغَلُونَا عَنْ صَلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى ، صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ ، مَلَأَ اللَّهُ قُبُورَهُمْ وَبُيُوتَهُمْ وَأَجْوَافَهُمْ نَارًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of the Trench, the polytheists did not give us the opportunity to perform the Asr prayer, until I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "May Allah fill their houses and graves with fire, for they did not let us perform the Asr prayer until the sun had set."
Hadith 1037
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : مَا عِنْدَنَا شَيْءٌ إِلَّا كِتَابَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى ، وَهَذِهِ الصَّحِيفَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " الْمَدِينَةُ حَرَامٌ مَا بَيْنَ عَائِرٍ إِلَى ثَوْرٍ ، مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِيهَا حَدَثًا أَوْ آوَى مُحْدِثًا ، فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ ، لَا يُقْبَلُ مِنْهُ عَدْلٌ وَلَا صَرْفٌ ، وَقَالَ : ذِمَّةُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَاحِدَةٌ ، فَمَنْ أَخْفَرَ مُسْلِمًا فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ ، لَا يُقْبَلُ مِنْهُ صَرْفٌ وَلَا عَدْلٌ ، وَمَنْ تَوَلَّى قَوْمًا بِغَيْرِ إِذْنِ مَوَالِيهِ ، فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ ، لَا يَقْبَلُ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ صَرْفًا وَلَا عَدْلًا " .
On one occasion, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We have nothing except the Book of Allah and this scroll. In this scroll, it is also written that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "From 'Ir to Thawr, Madinah Munawwarah is a sanctuary. Whoever introduces an innovation in it or gives refuge to an innovator, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will not accept any obligatory or voluntary act of worship from him. And the responsibility of all Muslims is the same; whoever breaks the protection of a Muslim, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people, and none of his obligatory or voluntary acts will be accepted. And if a slave starts calling someone other than his master as his master, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people, and on the Day of Resurrection, none of his obligatory or voluntary acts will be accepted."
Hadith 1038
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا لِي أَرَاكَ تَنَوَّقُ فِي قُرَيْشٍ ، وَتَدَعُنَا أَنْ تَزَوَّجَ إِلَيْنَا ؟ قَالَ : " وَعِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ ؟ " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : ابْنَةُ حَمْزَةَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّهَا ابْنَةُ أَخِي مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I once submitted in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Why do you prefer other families of Quraysh over us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you also have something?" I replied: Yes! The daughter of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "She is my foster niece." (In fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Amir Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) were foster brothers as well as uncle and nephew.)
Hadith 1039
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ : " إِذَا حَدَّثْتُكُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَدِيثًا ، فَظُنُّوا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَهْيَاهُ ، وَأَهْدَاهُ ، وَأَتْقَاهُ " .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When a hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is narrated before you, then think about it in the way that is upright, appropriate to it, and based on piety.
Hadith 1040
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، وَشُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " أَلَا أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، ثُمَّ عُمَرُ " .
On one occasion, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Shall I not tell you who is the best person in this Ummah after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 1041
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُطَّلِبُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ ، عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ خَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ فِي قَوْلِهِ : إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُنْذِرٌ وَلِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ هَادٍ سورة الرعد آية 7 ، قَالَ : " رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمُنْذِرُ ، وَالْهَادِ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that regarding what is stated in the Noble Qur’an: «﴿إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُنْذِرٌ وَلِكُلِّ قَوْمٍ هَادٍ﴾ [الرعد : 7]» "You are only a warner, and for every people there is a guide." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about this verse: "The warner and the guide is a man from Banu Hashim."
