Abdullah bin Harith says that once Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) led the people in the Asr prayer. After the prayer, he saw some people performing voluntary prayers. He went inside, and in the meantime, Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) also arrived, with whom I was present. Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) seated him beside him on the couch and asked him, "What is this prayer that I saw people performing? I have neither seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform this prayer nor command it." He replied, "Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) gives a fatwa regarding it." Just then, Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) also arrived, greeted, and sat down. Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "O Ibn Zubair! From whom have you taken these two rak‘ahs?" He replied, "Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) informed me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed this prayer in her house." Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a messenger to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked, "Ibn Zubair narrates from you that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform two rak‘ahs after Asr. What are these two rak‘ahs?" She replied, "Ibn Zubair did not remember correctly. I told him that one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed two rak‘ahs after Asr at my place. I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah! What are these two rak‘ahs which you have been commanded?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, 'No, rather these are the rak‘ahs I used to perform after Dhuhr, but I became so occupied with the distribution of wealth that the muezzin came to inform me of the Asr prayer, and I did not consider it appropriate to leave them, so I performed them now.'" Upon hearing this, Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said "Allahu Akbar" and said, "Does this not prove that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed them at least once? By Allah, I will never leave them." Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "You always insist on opposing."
