Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The night I was taken on the Night Journey (Mi'raj), I passed by Musa (peace be upon him), who was standing in his grave performing prayer.

Two men once came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a request for charity and donations. The Prophet (peace be upon him) looked up and observed them from head to toe and found them healthy and strong. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "If you wish, I will give to you, but there is no share in this for a wealthy person, nor for one who is strong and able to earn."

It is narrated from Ibn Abi Laila (may Allah be pleased with him) that several companions (may Allah be pleased with them) told us that once they were traveling with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One of them fell asleep, and another man quietly approached him and took his arrow. When that man woke up from his sleep, he became frightened. People began to laugh at his condition. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the people why they were laughing. The people said, "It is nothing, we just took his arrow, and he became frightened." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It is not lawful for a Muslim to frighten another Muslim."

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to us and said: "O people! There are two things; whoever Allah saves from their evil will enter Paradise." Upon this, an Ansari man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Do not tell us about those two things (lest we are unable to act upon them)." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated his statement, and the Ansari again said the same thing. The third time, his companions stopped him and said, "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wants to give us glad tidings; you are seeing this and yet you are stopping him?" He said, "I fear that people might rely solely on this." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are two things; whoever Allah saves from their evil will enter Paradise: one is that which is between the two jaws, and the other is that which is between the two legs."

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the ruling concerning the killer and the one who gives the order to kill. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The fire of Hell has been divided into seventy parts; sixty-nine parts are for the one who gives the order to kill, and one part is for the killer, and even that is sufficient for him.

A neighbor of Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that he heard the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying to Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her): "O Khadijah! By Allah! I will never worship Lat. By Allah! I will never worship Uzza." Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Fulfill your oath regarding Uzza and others." The narrator says that these were the names of the idols which the polytheists used to worship, and then they would lie down on their beds.

Abdur Rahman bin Bilmani (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once four companions of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered together somewhere. One of them said, "I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that if a servant repents even one day before his death, Allah Almighty accepts his repentance." The second asked, "Did you really hear the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say this?" The first replied, "Yes!" The second said, "I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that if a servant repents even half a day before his death, Allah Almighty accepts his repentance." The third asked, "Did you really hear the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say this?" The second replied in the affirmative. Upon this, the third said, "I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that if a servant repents even a quarter of a day before his death, Allah Almighty also accepts his repentance." The fourth asked, "Did you really hear the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say this?" As long as the pangs of death have not overtaken the servant, Allah Almighty accepts his repentance until that time.

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the people were fasting on the 30th day of Ramadan when two villagers came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and testified that they had seen the moon of Eid the previous night. So the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ordered the people to break their fast.

It is narrated from a Bedouin companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fasting in the month of Ramadan and three days in every month removes malice from the chest.

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade cupping and continuous fasting, but did not declare them unlawful so that permission for them would remain for the Companions.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ruh (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer in which he recited Surah Rum. During the recitation, something became confusing for him. After the prayer, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that Satan caused confusion for us during the recitation because of those people who come to prayer without ablution. Therefore, when you come for prayer, perform ablution thoroughly.

It is narrated from a companion of Banu Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) counted these things on the fingers of his blessed hand: "Subhan Allah" is equal to half the scale of deeds; "Alhamdulillah" fills the scale of deeds; the phrase "Allahu Akbar" fills all the space between the earth and the sky; cleanliness is half of faith, and fasting is half of patience.

Abu Qatadah and Abu Dhamma say that we reached a Bedouin man who told us that once the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took my hand and began to teach me those things which Allah had taught him, and said: "Whatever you leave out of fear of Allah, Allah Almighty will grant you something better than it."

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us the Tashahhud in the same manner as he would teach a surah of the Qur'an.

It is narrated from an Ansari companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Three things are obligatory upon every Muslim: taking a bath on Friday, using the miswak, and applying perfume, provided that he has it.

Yazid bin Abdullah says: I was at the camel market with Mutarrif when a Bedouin came; he had a piece of leather with him. He said, "Does anyone among you know how to read?" I said, "Yes!" and took the piece of leather from him. It was written on it: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), to Banu Zuhair bin Aqeesh, who are a tribe of 'Ukl. If they bear witness that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah, separate themselves from the polytheists, and acknowledge the share and selection of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the spoils of war (khums), then they are under the protection of Allah and His Messenger." We asked him, "What did you hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say?" He said, "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever wishes that the malice in his chest be removed, he should fast the month of patience (Ramadan) and three days in every month."

A messenger asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about migration, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Migration will not end as long as fighting against the enemy continues.

It is narrated from a companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to accept Islam, he made the condition that he would only perform two prayers. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted his condition.

Mutarrif bin Shukhair says that a Bedouin companion (may Allah be pleased with him) informed us that the shoes of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) were patched with leather.

It is narrated from the uncle of Abdur Rahman bin Abi Amrah (RA) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not combine my name and my kunyah (patronymic) together (i.e., that one person should take both my name and my kunyah)."

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Muslims are partners in three things: water, pasture, and fire.

Waki‘ narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, from his father, from a man from Aslam, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to a man: "If you say in the evening: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, all of them, from the evil of what He has created, no scorpion will harm you until morning."

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade cupping and continuous fasting, but did not declare them unlawful so that permission for them would remain for the Companions. Someone asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Do you yourself observe continuous fasting?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "If I do so, then my Lord feeds me and gives me drink."

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! So-and-so has a tree in my garden. Please tell him to either sell me that tree or gift it to me." But he refused to do so. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, "Do this, and in exchange you will have a tree in Paradise." But he still did not agree. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "He is the most miserly of people."

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was in the market of "Dhu al-Majaz." I was wearing a beautiful red and white sheet on my body. Suddenly, a man poked me with his stick and said, "Raise your lower garment, for it lasts longer and remains clean." When I looked, it was the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and when I observed, the lower garment of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was up to the middle of his shins.

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was in the market of "Dhu al-Majaz." I was wearing a beautiful red and white sheet on my body. Suddenly, a man poked me with his stick and said, "Raise your lower garment, for it lasts longer and remains clean." When I looked, it was the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), this is a beautiful sheet." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Even if it is beautiful, is there not an example for you in my person?" And I observed that the lower garment of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was up to the middle of his shins.

It is narrated from an Aslami companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Bilal! Bring us comfort through prayer.

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that I remember this: the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution in the mosque.

Mujahid says that Janadah bin Abi Umayyah was our governor for six years. One day he stood up and, while delivering a sermon, said: An Ansari companion (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us. We went to him and requested, "Please narrate to us a hadith that you yourself heard from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him); do not narrate any hadith you heard from others." By making this request, we put him in difficulty. Then he said: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stood among us to deliver a sermon and said: "I have warned you about the Messiah Dajjal. His (left) eye will be wiped out. With him will be mountains of bread and rivers of water. His sign will be that he will remain on earth for forty days, and his dominion will reach every watering place. However, he will not be able to enter four mosques: the Ka'bah, the Prophet's Mosque, Al-Aqsa Mosque. In any case, remember this much: Allah Almighty is not one-eyed. He (Dajjal) will be given power over a man whom he will kill and then bring back to life, but apart from this, he will not be given authority over anyone else."

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade selling fruit that is still on the tree in exchange for harvested fruit, except in the case of "‘araya," for which he granted a concession. The meaning of "‘araya" is that a person buys one or two trees in a garden and, in exchange, gives an estimated amount of harvested dates, and then includes those trees among his own. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted this only in such a limited quantity.

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was riding a donkey behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Suddenly, the donkey shied, and I uttered, "May the devil be ruined." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do not say this, because when you say this phrase, the devil considers himself very great and says, 'I have overpowered him with my strength.' But when you say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah), he becomes so insignificant in his own eyes that he becomes even smaller than a fly."

An Ansari companion (may Allah be pleased with him) says that once I left my house with the intention of presenting myself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). When I arrived there, I saw that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing, and with him was another man whose face was towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I thought that perhaps the two were discussing something important. By Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for so long that I began to feel pity for him. When that man left, I said, "O Messenger of Allah! This man kept you standing for so long that I began to feel pity for you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Did you see him?" I replied, "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do you know who he was?" I replied, "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "He was Jibreel (Gabriel, peace be upon him), who kept advising me continuously about the neighbor until I thought he would make him an heir in inheritance." Then he said, "If you had greeted him, he would surely have replied to you."

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The night I was taken on the Night Journey, I passed by Musa (peace be upon him), who was standing in his grave performing prayer.

It is narrated from a companion from Jahina (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), "When should I perform the Isha prayer?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "When the night has covered every valley."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that once some people who hunted in the sea came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and they asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we travel by sea and carry only a little water with us for drinking. If we use it for ablution, we will remain thirsty, and if we drink it, there will be no water left for ablution. Can we perform ablution with sea water? The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Yes! The water of the sea is purifying and its dead (fish) is lawful.

Abu Al-Aliyah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that once thirty companions (may Allah be pleased with them) gathered and said that the prayers in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite aloud are known to us, and those in which he did not recite aloud cannot be compared to the prayers in which he did; therefore, agree upon one opinion. Among them, there were not even two people who differed in this matter: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite in each of the first two rak'ahs of Zuhr an amount equal to thirty verses, and in the last two rak'ahs an amount equal to half of that; while in the first two rak'ahs of Asr, he used to recite an amount equal to half of the recitation of the first two rak'ahs of Zuhr, and in the last two rak'ahs, an amount equal to half of that.

It is mostly narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That Muslim who mixes with people and is patient over the harm that comes from them is far greater in reward than that Muslim who does not associate with people so that he does not have to be patient over their harm.

It is narrated from a companion of Banu Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Subhan Allah" is equal to half the scale of deeds, "Alhamdulillah" fills the scale of deeds, the phrase "Allahu Akbar" fills all the space between the earth and the sky, cleanliness is half of faith, and fasting is half of patience.

It is narrated from a freed slave companion of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) that the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "How excellent are five things! And how heavy are they in the scale of deeds? La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, and a righteous child who passes away and his father remains patient over it." And he said: "How excellent are five things! Whoever meets Allah with faith in these five things will enter Paradise: having faith in Allah, in the Day of Judgment, in Paradise and Hell, in being resurrected after death, and in the reckoning."

It is narrated from a Companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Destruction is for gold and silver." He (the Companion) came into the presence of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) along with Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! You have said that destruction is for gold and silver, then what should a person have?" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A tongue that remembers (Allah), a heart that is grateful, and a wife who helps in matters of the Hereafter."
