Regarding How Many Grandmothers Can Inherit

Ibrahim narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted wealth to three grandmothers. The narrator says: I asked Ibrahim, "Who are they?" He replied: The father's mother, the maternal grandmother, and the deceased's maternal grandmother.

33400 - He said: I said to Ibrahim: Who? He said: (Two grandmothers from his father's side and one grandmother from his mother's side) (1).

It is narrated from Bard that Hazrat Mak'hool says: Three grandmothers are heirs, and among them, the one who is the lowest in lineage is entitled to the largest share of one-sixth of the wealth.

Dawood narrates that Hazrat Aamir said: When four grandmothers are gathered, the maternal grandmother will not be an heir.

It is narrated from Ibrahim that Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Three grandmothers are heirs: two grandmothers from the mother's side and one grandmother from the father's side.

Tawoos narrates the statement of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that all four grandmothers are heirs.

Sahm Faraizi says that Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) used to make four grandmothers heirs.

Hisham reports from Hasan Basri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked about four grandmothers, so he said that three of them will inherit and the mother’s grandmother will not inherit.

Hisham Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that he used to make nine grandmothers heirs and said that when any grandmother is closer (in relation), then the wealth will go to her only and the remaining grandmothers will not receive it.

Yunus Hasan narrates that you used to make three grandmothers heirs and said that among them, the one who is closest will be given the wealth, not the other grandmothers, and when the grandmothers are of equal degree, the wealth will be distributed among them.

Mansur narrates the statement of Ibrahim that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, divided one-sixth of the wealth between the maternal grandmother and the two paternal grandmothers. Hazrat Zaida says that I asked Hazrat Mansur, "By paternal grandmothers, do you mean the father's mother and the father's maternal grandmother?" He replied, "Yes!"

33410 - Za'idah said: I said to Mansur: The one from his father's side or his father's (and his mother's father)? (1) He said: Yes.

Mansur says that Ibrahim said: When there are grandmothers from one side, some of whom are closer than others, then the more distant grandmother will be deprived.

Fudayl narrates that Ibrahim said that grandmothers are heirs to one-sixth of the wealth. So, whether there is one, two, or three, the share will be divided among them according to the statement of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him). And when three grandmothers gather, each of whom is equally related to the deceased, then one share will be divided among them. These grandmothers are: the maternal grandmother, the paternal grandmother, and the paternal great-grandmother. And Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when three grandmothers gather, one-sixth of the wealth will be divided among them, even if none of them is closer in lineage to the deceased, such that none of them is the mother of the other.

Shu'bi narrates about Hazrat Masruq that four grandmothers of equal degree came to him, so he made three of the grandmothers heirs and deprived the maternal grandmother.

It is narrated from Abu al-Muhallab that two grandmothers came to Hazrat Shurayh, and he divided one-sixth of the wealth between them.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin states that Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to make grandmothers heirs, even if they were ten, and he used to say that this is a share which the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has granted them.

Sha'bi narrates that four grandmothers of equal degree came to him, so he made three of the grandmothers heirs and deprived the maternal grandmother.

Hazrat Qasim narrates that a man passed away and he left behind his two grandmothers, that is, his maternal and paternal grandmothers. Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) made the maternal grandmother an heir and deprived the other. Then an Ansari said that if these two grandmothers had died and their sons were alive, then the son of the grandmother whom you made an heir would not inherit, and the son of the one whom you left out would inherit. Thus, Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also made her an heir and included them both in the one-sixth share of the wealth.
