Amrah bint Abd al-Rahman reported that it was related about Sayyidah Habibah bint Sahl (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) beat her so severely that it was not known how far it had gone. So she came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the darkness before dawn and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) of her condition. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to Thabit): "Take (it) from her." She said: "Listen! What he gave me is with me just as it was." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then take (it) from her." So Thabit took it from her. Amrah said: Then she went to stay with her family.

A similar hadith is also narrated from Sayyidah Habibah bint Sahl (may Allah be pleased with her), that the same incident took place concerning Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas.

Sayyidah Habibah bint Sahl (may Allah be pleased with her) was a woman whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had intended to marry. Then Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) proposed to her and married her. There was harshness in the temperament of Thabit bin Qays; he beat her, and she came in the darkness before dawn to the door of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and said: "Who is this?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am Habibah. Neither I (can stay with Thabit) nor Thabit (with me)." Then Thabit came after her, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Did you beat her?" He said: "Yes, I beat her." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take (it) from her." Habibah said: "O Messenger of Allah, everything he gave me is with me." So Thabit took it from her, and she stayed in her house.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Habibah bint Sahl (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), and she came to dislike him; Thabit was an unattractive man. So she came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, when I see him, were it not for the fear of Allah, I would spit in his face." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you return to him the garden that he gave you as your dowry (mahr)?" She said: "Yes." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Thabit, and Habibah returned the garden to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) separated the two of them. This was the first khul' in Islam.
